The contrast between the two messages is revealing. Trump’s note is entirely personal: friend, greatness, strength, wisdom. PM Modi’s response is courteous but operates on a completely different plane. He thanks Trump for the wishes but avoids the language of friendship, personal rapport, or shared chemistry. Instead, he pivots immediately to the ‘India-US comprehensive global strategic partnership’ and its benefits for both nations.

That choice of emphasis is hard to miss. Trump is talking leader-to-leader; PM Modi is talking state-to-state. Nothing unfriendly about it. But it reads less like a message between political friends and more like one between heads of government conscious of the moment they are in.
