In their book, @drkellydavidson, Dr. @staceymargarita, & Dr. @ProfeRandolph provide critical insights into how PK-12 language educators can (re)design their instruction toward justice. Read Dr. Wellington & Dr. @Alex_Corbitt's review: https://t.co/Xg5AgZMmPE @InfoAgePub
Social worker: She let him back in the house, even though there was an protective order in place.
Me: (a little bit snarky): Were you there when she let him? Did you see her open the door for him?
Social worker: No, no. I wasn't there. I didn't actual see it. He was just there when I went to the house.
Me: So given his history of violence, threats and control and given that the judge made the order against him, it would be better, and more accurate, to say "Dad chose to violate the court order" and not assume that "she let him back in" but to consider how this was a continuation of his pattern of abuse.
Accountability starts with language. @StopBlamingMothers #StopIgnoringFathers @safeandtogether #CoerciveControl
When language is thought to be a "skill" that anyone can acquire with hard work, this will always justify linguistic discrimination.
(Because certain people never tried "hard enough").
I cannot tell you how excited I am to discuss these important topics with ACTFL members & other world language professionals. Registration for the first discussion (on Thursday, 4/25) is now open. You don't need to be an ACTFL member to attend. I hope to see you there! #langchat
Check it out! We had a big weekend at the border delivering winter coats and blankets, making glasses, and showing our support for the immigrant community along the Mexican border. @ClemsonCofEd#langchat
PhD students at @ClemsonCofEd Annie West and Hannah Best went to the Texas/Mexico border with Dr. Stephanie Madison. Learning about the experiences of immigrant children is transformative for educators. Thank you, Annie and Hannah! @PracticeMercy#literacy#humanity#access
This is Benny. He noticed the weather has been pretty terrible outside. Would be a real shame if that meant you had to spend alllll day cuddling on the couch. 13/10
I recently met a child on his way to visit his father at Stewart Detention Center. He told me:
"My dad is in jail, but he didn't do anything wrong. He didn't hurt anybody or do any crimes. He just wasn't born here."
What a thing for a child to say.
