There's an opportunity cost to the SOR conversation. Every time we're in it what are we NOT talking about that matters as much or more for literacy development?
@PeterYungblut The students from my 5th grade group were able to practice with books on the level they needed while also building confidence through helping younger students in seeing themselves as mentors and tutors for 2nd grade students. They grew as readers and leaders.
@PeterYungblut What grade-level? One of the most powerful experiences I had with the use of Reading Buddies was taking the kids in my 5th grade class that I was working with in intensive, small-group intervention, and partnering them with students in a 2nd grade class.Cont
And just imagine a time when every child (whether 1 or 18) feels valued and has their life and experiences validated by the ability to see themselves and their world reflected in the books they are reading.🤔
Made it through my first year as a high school Assistant Principal! A few honest reflections:
1. Build and protect relationships
2. Admit wrong;
apologize, and improve
3. Keep student welfare first
4. Listen!!!!!
So many more, but I’ve ALOT more to learn!
Say it with me for the people in the back…It’s👏🏻not👏🏻rote.👏🏻
That is not how we truly LEARN. Depending solely on rote practice/memorization does not allow our brains to truly engage our existing and create new neural connections and pathways.
We all need to stop diminishing and devaluing de/encoding. It's not easy to gain. It's not rote. It does take applied effort over time.
Written language is an amazing feat of our species and every time an individual person gains the ability to read and write, we should celebrate
I love when Belle says, “Let me read this one to you, Mommy!” We have been intentional in teaching her to love books and find joy in reading before we started worrying about anything else. She learned how to love reading, and now that she’s ready, she’s learning how to read.💁🏼♀️
“(Weisler & Mathes, 2011). It concluded that instruction that integrated encoding into decoding instruction led to significantly higher reading achievement.” ✅ If you want students who can read well, incorporate explicit spelling instruction.
Anyone advocating a "single factor solution" 2a problem as complex as ensuring all kids learn to read well does not understand all of the internal (to schools+classrooms)+external (failures of our society to promote healthy children)factors that stand in way of universal literacy
My fellow Americans — enough.
It’s time for each of us to do our part. It’s time to act.
For the children we have lost, for the children we can save, for the nation we love — let us hear the call and cry, let us meet this moment, let us finally do something.
No where else I would have rather been at 8am after 3 days in NOLA!😂 It was a wonderful morning of learning with @AthenaBinikos and @La_Believes #teacherleaders! We could have gone all day!❤️
When I read this thread, I see and hear all of the ARC Core schools I am part of and am even more proud to be a part of the work we do day in/out to ensure all children will read on grade level.❤️ There is joy, inquiry, collaboration, and GROWTH for all.
Pics to show what instruction aligned w/ the science of reading *really* looks like (because Balanced Literacy doesn't have a monopoly on joy)
#SOR is not reading from a basal
It’s kids cuddled up on beanbags enjoying a good book together because they have been *taught* to read
Tier 1 is comprehensive and should bring discrete skills together, so they become inseparable and entwined as the proficiency of reading develops. Reading, writing, speaking, listening, language standards are designed to be woven into an interconnected tapestry. #Tier1IsNotTier3
Yes!! We need to separate the #SoR from the #SoRM. Both have a place, but they are NOT the same thing! We need to help educators access the word on the page; not just the word of mouth that often comes through the “middleman”. #InformedEducators#Nuance#EvolvingResearch
#NationalReadingMonth was the perfect time for the girls to receive their custom libraries from Mama’s company! We’ve already started reading them! Belle will have them all read by Monday!😅
