The visual documentation of Roma and Sinti victims made in Auschwitz by Dina Gottliebova-Babbitt on the orders of Josef Mengele constitutes unique evidence of the persecution of those individuals and of the crimes committed against Roma people. They are not simply works whose ownership can be considered separately from the circumstances in which they were created. They are in fact among the very few surviving documents connected directly with Mengele’s pseudoscientific racial research.
The Museum fully recognizes that they are closely connected with Dina Gottliebova-Babbitt’s fate, suffering, and survival. Those interests are not external to the history of those objects; they form part of it. But these documents also carry the memory and tragedy of the Roma men and women whom they portray. Their history must remain central to any consideration of what these documents are and why they matter.
Treating these documents as equivalent to works of art confiscated from their owners by the Nazis is a mischaracterization of their origin and historical function. They were not works taken from a private collection. They were also not created freely. The historical research indicates that Josef Mengele controlled the process itself: he provided the paper and watercolours, selected the Roma prisoners to portray, and determined how those portraits were to be made. Their origin, purpose, and historical meaning are inseparable from the crime and the place where they were created.
The originals should remain - as documents - in the collection of the Museum and continue to be accessible to all at the site. The Memorial has a responsibility not only to preserve the historic site and all authentic objects connected with the crimes committed at Auschwitz, but also to ensure that the exceptionally rare evidence connected with Roma and Sinti victims will continue to bear witness at the place of their persecution.
☀️ The Cuban Red Cross is bringing light back where it is needed most.
Despite extreme weather and severely damaged roads, Cuban Red Cross volunteers reached Tranquera, a community in Granma affected by Hurricane Melissa, to install a new solar energy system.
“Today, in Tranquera, that light is on.” - Jorge Verdecia Ramírez, Cuban Red Cross
Now fully operational, the system will help keep essential medical services running during power outages, enabling healthcare workers to provide uninterrupted care, safely store vital medicines and strengthen community preparedness.
This support forms part of the @IFRC Emergency Appeal, which seeks to raise CHF 18 million to support the Cuban Red Cross response and help 100,000 people recover over 24 months.
Our fight against Trump’s ambition to take over Greenland has been won.
The new agreement explicitly recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination.
Thank you to everyone who has stood with us and supported Greenland. 🇬🇱
1951: Denmark keeps sovereignty. U.S. gets broad rights to operate military facilities in Greenland.
2026: Denmark keeps sovereignty. U.S. keeps broad rights to operate military facilities in Greenland.
The “new” part? Blocking adversarial military activity that wasn’t occurring.
