Pumpkins.
Halloween is one night.
If you have to waste a food item (and I strongly suggest you don't), please put it out for one night, then dispose of it.
Please DO NOT put it out for the wildlife.
Once you've handled it, cut it, left it out in the open, unrefrigerated, it will not be hygienic or safe for anyone to eat.
Pumpkins are a low-acid vegetable, so once they are cut and left at room temperature, pathogens will rapidly grow on the flesh.
Our precious wildlife do not have any magical properties that protect them against food poisoning.
Additionally, pumpkin has a laxative affect so it would be particularly cruel to leave it out for starving wildlife to eat in desperation, causing them to lose precious fluids that may make the difference between life and death.
So no matter what you read elsewhere, please DO NOT put your discarded decoration out for the birds or any other wildlife.
It's waste, fit only for the bin.
Please don't dump Halloween pumpkins in the countryside, or leave them to rot in your garden. Eating pumpkins can make hedgehogs, birds & other animals ill – so dispose of pumpkins in a compost bin or council food waste bin, or bury under 20cm soil.

A quick and easy way to #HelpTheBees during warm weather - make a bee bowl! These are great because bees need to drink, but they can drown in deep or fast-flowing water sources. Here's how to set up one up: https://t.co/rGlSu0BWSS 🐝
How many people out there are giving wildflowers a chance by leaving areas of their gardens uncut this year? Please RT if you are offering a lifeline to pollinators like bees, butterflies, moths, hoverflies and bats by mowing less 🐝
How can we possibly know how to deliver the best care possible if we don’t know what it’s like to be on the receiving end of our care?
