Reading Like a Historian is a great teaching strategy that uses a variety if resources to explore different historical questions. Students actually become historians and learn for themselves instead of just listening to information and repeating it.

@30aughtsix@LisaGilligan4 Great assignment; students love activities where they can express themselves and show what they have learned in alternative ways.
@AngelaWitcher8@LisaGilligan4 I love this idea. I taught summer school this summer, and there was a brief question each day over roots, prefixes, and/or suffixes. I tried to show my students how they can actually know a lot about unknown words just by knowing the meaning of its parts.
@AmberBarnhill_ @LisaGilligan17 I try to teach my students this strategy with poetry. Many times, just rereading....no explanation at all...will add understanding.
One way to promote a culture of literacy at the middle school is to do exciting commercials over the morning announcements for new book arrivals. Another idea is to make the library more like a hangout space/coffee shop atmostphere.

I like all of the these strategies, but I really like the one about teaching whole body listening. We are a world of multitaskers, and it seems to keep us from truly paying attention to the task at hand.

@lockette_j That is an interesting assignment! Most students like to tell on each other and blame each other, so describing Terrible Tommy's actions should be a great task!
@margaretcromie_ Yes, comparison is a great teaching strategy. I have found that most standardized testing now has students compare two different pieces of literature.
@AmberBarnhill_ Great way to enhance a lesson-This works for adults too. After a study about the crucifixion/resurrection of Jesus, I carried a small, symbolic nail & stone to constantly remember what was done for me. The same works in the c/room. Visual objects help to solidify what was taught.
@AngelaDaniel208 Pictures are a great idea. I was reviewing types of conflict and conflict as part of the plot today in summer school, and pictures would have been a great addition rather than me just speaking examples.
@30aughtsix@LisaGilligan4@JSerravallo I like this assignment, and I loved seeing your Reading segment on the morning announcements! I also enjoy seeing pictures that teachers are posting from their classes.
@margaretcromie_@LisaGilligan4 I'm so glad your students are learning about the 9-11 attacks...it shocks me how many students are unaware of what actually happened. I also like using K-W-L Charts, especially for History.
This is a great article to explain visual learning, and it gives practical strategies to teach it. I really liked the 4 Ws strategy. It forces the students to think beyond just what they see.

I used "label your pictures" with my stdnts. B/C most require hand/hand, I first allowed them to cut/paste the parts of the plant/environment, then they attmptd to write them out. I also used a simple pic for them to color.

The earlier students are exposed to informational texts, the better. This article gives practical ways to do just that.
