For centuries, European imperialism and the colonial borders it imposed have sought to divide Africans, fostering fear of one another rather than encouraging people to challenge the systems that impoverish them. In this clip, Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), pushes back against the claim that greater African unity would somehow "collapse" South Africa.

He argues that migration between African communities is not new. Long before the EFF, Africans built economies, cities and industries together. South Africa’s mines, railways and industries were built through the labour of Mozambicans, Malawians and countless other African workers, he says. Even Fanakalo, the mining pidgin language developed under colonial labour systems, is proof of how deeply interconnected Africans have always been.

Malema also challenges a common anti-immigrant narrative: if poverty alone automatically forces people to migrate, then why don’t all poor South Africans leave provinces like Limpopo for Gauteng? Why do people across Africa still remain deeply tied to their homes, families, languages and communities?

At its core, this is a debate about colonial borders, economic inequality and Pan-Africanism. The same borders drawn by colonial powers continue to divide Africans politically, while multinational corporations and Western capital move across the continent freely.

The question Malema raises is important: are Africans truly a threat to one another, or have colonial systems taught them to see each other that way?
