"Thames Water sewage spills set for record high."
Hard to believe isn't it, even after all of the outrage, all of the publicity, all of the anger Thames Water is well on course to dump more sewage this year than at any point in the last 10 years.
Time for govt to act, time to take back TW.

🎉 Congratultations to Southampton University, winners of this year's University Catering Award sponsored by @TUCOltd
Facing a £1.3m deficit, the team turned it around with a new Catered Package, longer opening hours & new outlets. Well done to the whole @unisouthampton team! 👏
I see that @DefraGovUK are still making claims about a so called £104 billion in "private-sector" investment in the water industry. Note it's gone up since Monday.
Perhaps someone would like to provide a break down of that and confirm exactly how much of that is being funded directly by bill payers.
Oh, and did @Northhumbrian explain who they were potentially misleading about sewage dumping at Whitburn? Is it 1,000,000 tonnes in 2023 or not?
Thames Water has just 5 weeks worth of cash left.
That's why Tuesday at the High Court is D-Day. One of two things will happen, the court will agree to another £3,000,000,000 in debt been added to customers' bills or it goes into special administration, it's made insolvent.

"Revealed: Thames Water diverted ‘cash for clean-ups’ to help pay bonuses."
In 2023 @Thameswater underspent their environmental obligation to the @EnvAgency by £1.1bn. Now we know why. They used some if not all of that money for other company costs including bonuses and dividends.
That £1.1bn formed part of the WINEP programme, a legally binding commitment to the @EnvAgency to deliver a certain number of clean up projects by 2025.
Is anyone from TW going to be prosecuted for breaking the law?

Water bills to rise 20% (£86) plus inflation in April and then above inflation for the next four years. @Ofwat gives private water companies in England the go-ahead to make customers pay for the investment they have failed to do for 30 years while enriching shareholders and bosses
It’s week three of @Feargal_Sharkey's mission to investigate the toxicity of Britain’s rivers.
And he’s finally found one that *passes* some of the tests.
But it’s not all plain sailing on the River Wye…
Did I mention by the way that as part of @NickFerrariLBC's challenge we've been testing E. coli levels in rivers.
Now remember anything above 900 cfu/100ml (colony forming units in 100ml of water), is graded as 'Poor' for bathing water quality and anything above 1,000 cfu/100ml is just getting down right dangerous.
On the River Severn at Worcester we found levels of 48,900 cfu/100ml.
E. coli can cause diarrhea (which can be bloody), abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, weakened immune systems, kidney failure, anemia, and low platelet count, long-term health complications or even death.
You have been warned.

I know it seems so utterly incredible as to be unbelievable but London and the south east really is running out of water.
Don't believe me? @SouthernWater is in talks to tanker in water from Norwegian fjords and no, I'm not kidding nor is it 1st April.

1. You might not have heard of it, but the system supposed to protect us in England and Wales from #floods is an absolute disgrace: a network of old boys' clubs completely unaccountable to the public. No wonder it fails so badly.
My column + thread.

It’s clearly ridiculous that a water company discharging untreated sewage into our rivers in hundreds of locations can be described as industry leading and an exemplar.
And it’s been ridiculous for years.

"Tories tried to hide extent of sewage spills before election."
Fantastic story by @zdboren@adamvaughan_uk
As a govt minister @_RobbieMoore tired to bully @EnvAgency into withholding sewage dumping data.
Care to comment Mr Moore? No? Thought not.
