Update to this .@AmericanAir , after a
6 hour layover and some more delays we finally got onto a flight! Pulling onto the runway to takeoff and the windshield wiper stops working. No worries, just a few minutes of paperwork, the pilot says. An hour on the tarmac later and the paperwork is done! But now the pilot is timed out. Back to the gate at 1:12 AM.

.@AmericanAir worst travel experience by far—and I haven’t even gotten on a plane yet.

My first flight is now 3 hrs 20 min delayed for maintenance, which caused me to miss my connection. I’m rebooked with a 6+ hr layover and will now arrive 8 hrs late, after midnight. The rental car desk closes 5 min after I land, so I’ll likely have to go back for my car tomorrow.

Tried to buy Admirals Club passes for the day, but your system was down—so the desk told me to buy online. I did, you charged my credit card, and then I got an error saying you couldn’t provide the passes. Customer support can’t find the charge and says there’s nothing they can do.

I will say, though: Cyndy at the desk in Houston is top notch. 👏

In a Texas PI case, the county where you file can be worth seven figures. Sometimes eight. Most of us know that. The problem is acting on it with more than a gut feeling.

You’re a lawyer. Why should you care about dental service organizations?

Because they are coming for us.

Not the dentists. Private equity.

Dentistry was the beta test. Private equity figured out how to separate the professional from the business, centralize the back end, and skim profit at scale. They just changed the acronym.

DSOs became MSOs.

The playbook is simple:
Buy practices.
Strip out operations.
Centralize intake, marketing, billing, tech.
Push the fees upstream.
Leave the lawyers holding the licenses.

Congratulations. You no longer work at a law firm. You work for a managed service organization that happens to rent your bar card.

Bundle enough firms together, cut costs, standardize everything, and suddenly the business is scalable, sellable, and ready for an exit. Ring the bell. Cash out. Move on.

I am sure Atticus Finch had that in mind.

I get the appeal. If you are an older lawyer with a large practice, no partners, and no kids who want it, private equity looks like a clean exit. The wire transfer probably clears just fine.

But for the rest of us, the ones who did not go to law school to work for a 30-year-old MBA armed with a Copilot-enhanced Excel spreadsheet, this deserves some skepticism.
