@MissUlbrichOSU I think maybe writing out mathematical stories instead of introducing numeric symbols is better because then it helps establish that math really is a language and reads in a particular order due to the meaning of the symbols.
@MissUlbrichOSU I think the last question is important because I think it can help guide the lesson planning process, and hopefully as a teacher we can make connections as to what our students are learning and how they are utilizing those lessons. It helps engage with our students’ learning.
@MrCourtneyOSU Task 10 seems the toughest for me because the missing side lengths are kinda of tricky so see the relationship with the other sides in terms of perimeter. It requires multiple steps and usage of other sides, so I think it’s pretty complicated for students to understand.

In fact, we would do this with sighted students as well, so VI kids can be included in the GenEd room

@MissTaliahK_OSU A28: I think the second misconception of the child not understanding that parts need to be equal size bc kids often struggle with this concept, hence why cutting a sand which in half seems more than one whole sand which. It’s hard to conceptualize and understand at this age.
@MissTaliahK_OSU A27: I sometimes think that hearing the students explain their process can answer gaps that their written work neglects. If a student can’t reason with words how they arrived at an answer, it could show they don’t understand the math concept even if they got the right answer.

@MissMorosky Just like we have seen in videos in class, students take ownership of their thinking and really start to see relationships built about a problem when they collaborate with peers and teacher. Encouraging students to explain their work is critical to their overall understanding.
@MissMorosky Often times as teachers we forget that we have background knowledge and experiences that our students don’t; therefore, teachers often assume students know more than they actually do. We need to not assume students know something and seize teachable moments in everything.
@MeaganClardy A17: I think the 1st and 3rd points stick out to me the most bc I think this is how I was asked to explain my thinking at that age; however, I have slowly started to shift my thinking to the 2nd point bc I want students to feel capable, just like last week’s class discussed.

@MissSmithOSU I think that when we put emphasis on what the REAL problem is at hand, it can create a sense of fun “urgency” that places the value on the mathematics rather than the drawings of the problems. Allowing time at the end for creative outlets after mathematics could be an option too.
@MissSmithOSU I definitely struggled overcoming with the 5th misconception because I think so many teachers never emphasized the space in between. I finally remember learning that it was the “jumps” that lead us to the answer; our teachers need to remember the basics so our students know them.
