I have received with a heavy heart the painful news of the death of Professor Abubakar Mohammed El-Jummah, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at Nigerian Army University, Biu, Borno State who died in captivity after nearly a year following his abduction along the Damaturu–Buni Yadi–Biu road.

The circumstances surrounding his kidnapping on March 3, 2025, and his eventual demise while in the custody of the terrorists are indeed heartbreaking. Prof. El-Jummah was a distinguished academic, and a patriot truly committed to nurturing young minds and advancing technological development in our nation. I met him for the first time around November, 1994G.
While a loss of this magnitude would be felt by his family the most, it also a represents a huge loss to the university community, the people of Borno State, and Nigeria as a whole.

I extend my heartfelt condolences to his beloved family, colleagues, students, Borno State Government and all those who were touched by his scholarship, mentorship, and humanity.

May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds, expand his grave, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus. May Allah grant his family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss and humiliate the criminals, their sponsors and supporters.

I have noted with increasing concern the heightened pronouncements on Nigeria by President Donald Trump. This follows his designation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern.”

It is important to emphasise that our country is a sovereign nation whose people face different threats from outlaws across the country. The insecurity we face does not distinguish based on religious, ethnic, or political beliefs.

The United States should assist the Nigerian authorities with better cutting-edge technology to tackle these problems, rather than posing a threat that could further polarise our country.

The Nigerian government should also consider appointing special envoys from its distinguished diplomats to engage the American government. Additionally, it is necessary to appoint permanent ambassadors to represent Nigeria’s interests on the international stage.

To my fellow countrymen, this is an important moment where we should emphasise unity of belonging over division.
