ANCYL NEC member endorses John Mpe at Molemole Five commemoration
The African National Congress (ANC) has officially commemorated the Molemole Five fallen cadres at a solemn ceremony held at Rangers Sports Ground in Esleben, Limpopo.
The event honoured ANC members who lost their lives in a tragic bus crash on the R71 in the Magoebaskloof area near Tzaneen in 2024, while travelling to Mbombela Stadium for the party’s 112th anniversary celebrations in Mpumalanga.
The commemoration also marked the 70th anniversary of the Freedom Charter, adopted in 1955, with the keynote address delivered by Deputy Minister of Police and ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) member Cassel Mathale.
Among those in attendance were leaders from the ANC’s Peter Mokaba Region, members of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC), the ANC Women’s League, the ANC Youth League (ANCYL), COSAS and various community stakeholders.
As part of the programme, the ANC paid commemorative visits to the families of the fallen cadres, the Setabola, Makganyoga, Rakubu, Mapfumo and Machaba families reaffirming the movement’s commitment to maintaining a lasting relationship with those who lost loved ones in the tragedy.
Ahead of the keynote address, ANCYL NEC member Douglas Ngobeni delivered a political message that included an endorsement of John Mpe for the position of ANC Limpopo provincial chairperson. “We are going to be an ANCYL that rises to the occasion when unemployment rises and does not go around begging. We must be an ANCYL that says young people want this, and young people get this. We want to lobby branches to convince members that John Mpe must become the ANC provincial chairperson next year,” Ngobeni said.
His remarks were met with approval from the crowd, who responded with a show of hands and laughter as the key speaker prepared to take to the podium.
Mathale led the formal recognition ceremony, officially declaring the Molemole Five as “fallen cadres” who died in the line of duty while serving the movement. “The ANC’s bond with the families of the fallen five is permanent,” Mathale said, adding that the organisation would continue to reconnect with and support them. “Their undying spirits will continue to guide the ANC.”
He emphasised that the ceremony served a dual purpose by linking the sacrifice of the Molemole Five to the ongoing struggle for the ideals of the Freedom Charter, particularly its core principles of equality, dignity and justice for all.
Since the incident, the ANC’s Peter Mokaba Region has maintained ongoing support for the bereaved families, including the provision of food vouchers and gifts to help ensure dignified holiday periods for the survivors.
Belgium files intervention in ICJ Gaza genocide case, supports South Africa’s legal position
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) announced today, Tuesday that Belgium has formally filed a declaration of intervention in the high-profile case concerning the application of the Genocide Convention in the Gaza Strip (South Africa v. Israel).
The move, lodged on December 23, invokes Article 63 of the Court's Statute, which grants states that are parties to a convention the right to intervene in proceedings concerning its interpretation.
In its filing, Belgium emphasized that its intervention focuses on the interpretation of Articles I through VI of the 1948 Genocide Convention. It intends to provide particular attention to Article II, specifically regarding the legal interpretation of the "specific intent" required to establish genocidal intent.
The case was originally initiated by South Africa on December 29, 2023, which accused Israel of violating its obligations under the Genocide Convention during its military operations in Gaza. The ICJ has since issued a series of provisional measures ordering Israel to take steps to prevent acts of genocide.
In accordance with court procedure, the ICJ has invited both South Africa and Israel to provide written observations on Belgium's intervention, as per Article 83 of the Rules of Court. Belgium joins a growing list of nations, including Brazil, Colombia, Ireland, Mexico, Spain, and Türkiye, which have previously filed similar declarations in the case.
The intervention does not mean Belgium is becoming a party to the dispute. Instead, it exercises a procedural right to present its legal interpretation of the convention at the heart of the case. The court's final judgment on the merits of South Africa's allegations is expected to take years.
