“Our nation’s children are increasingly diverse. Their books aren’t.” We stand with @diversebks4all's efforts to “increase access to affordable, high-quality children’s books by and about diverse cultures, races, identities and abilities.”

If your WiFi or internet connection is slow over the next few weeks, just know it’s because every educator in America is taking a bloodborne pathogen test online, and we still don’t know why we have to take it EVERY YEAR, but we will get through it as quick as we can.
There's a new book by elementary teacher @LindsayKemeny. It provides many good ideas for HOW to teach reading. Specific things teachers can DO. There's a clear explanation of the WHY. Lots of citations to research. Not about any one program.

@karsextavis I like “West Virginia Phonics”complete lessons contain phonemic awareness & phonics, teacher scaffolds, etc… a very solid intervention tool.
The #ScienceOfReading is NOT just a knowledge base for Primary Teachers! It’s essential for ALL teachers! Educators in junior, intermediate & secondary divisions must know how to support their Ss needs, too. Thank you @WhatWorksED for these free resources!

Repeated reading is not the only option for building fluency. Reading lots of texts only once, often w/ an adult or peer listening, correcting, defining words, &/or asking comprehension ?s, also has pos effects on fluency & comprehension in a # of studies. https://t.co/2zy2ETq0g8
Another easy activity and an opportunity for immediate feedback. Adding literacy centres into our routine has been a game changer in our classroom. Students are able to work on the skills they need to work on and we can support them. @TLDSB@tldsb_literacy @LeslieFrostPS
Teachers may know WHAT to teach but not always HOW to teach it.
These are a few of my favourite, high yield teaching strategies & reading resources for #FSL@RideauPS_LDSB:
#1. Elkonian boxes: Help Ss segment words into individual sounds with magnets on cookie sheets! 🧵
