My boomer mom retired at 60.

Full pension. Owns her house outright. Medicare kicked in at 65. Social security at 66.

Told me at Christmas, I just need to stop buying coffee out and I'd have a house by now.

I make $58,000. Rent is $1,600. I have $2,100 in savings.

But here's what I wanted to say:

Your pension existed because unions fought for it before your generation voted most of them out.

Your social security check clears because mine is still funding it.

Your home is worth $650,000 because mine would cost $475,000, if I could even save the down payment.

Cats understand death. If the cat’s person dies and the cat is not able to confirm the death, the cat may continue to wait, look for their person, or even grieve themselves to death.

It’s very important that the cat be able to spend a few moments with the dead person. When one of our kitties passes, we have a wake. We lay the body on a blanket and let the other kitties pay their respects. They will all come, usually one at a time. They will stand over their dead friend and stare. They will usually sniff and maybe lick. When they walk away, they know.

We learned the hard way that if a cat dies at the vet’s office we have to bring the body home for a wake. One of the male cats lost his brother and we failed to bring the body home. He screamed and cried for months looking for him. He eventually got so stressed that he got sick and died himself.

Cats tend to form a very special bond with their person. They choose who that person is. They may never completely recover from the loss of their person. Being able to confirm the finality of death makes the process much easier.

Took my cat to the vet because he was limping. The vet examined him and said "There's nothing wrong with his leg." I said "But he's been limping for three days." She said "Can you show me?" I called my cat over and he walked. Normally. No limp. The vet looked at me. I looked at my cat. She said "Maybe he was faking it for attention?" I paid $75 for her to tell me my cat is manipulating me. When we got home he immediately started limping again. I locked eyes with him and he slowly put weight back on the paw and walked away normally. I'm living with a con artist. He did it again this morning when I was eating tuna. I gave him some. He won.

Today in trauma informed care - my surgeon just called to reassure me that her entire team is women, and that the only cis-man is the anesthesiologist - and that he will not be alone with me at any point. She told me she'd made sure that I'll be surrounded by women when I go to sleep, and when I wake up. She went out of her way to do all this to make sure a survivor could recieve the trauma informed medical care they needed. Women in STEM. The whole room will be women in STEM
