SLP working w kids w dev. trauma, OOHC and SEBD. Pragmatics to literacy and everything in between. Supporting the teams around the kids. Learning & educating.
Don't get caught up in the speech-to-print/print-to-speech debate. We don't have evidence one is superior. What matters for schools:
i) have a phonics scope & sequence
ii) systematic & explicit instruction
iii) students blend AND segment
iv) overlay a morphology scope & sequence
Incredulous to read VIC govt may axe roles of highly specialised visiting teachers for students w vision & hearing impairment, in favour of “disability inclusion coaches”. Such loss of expertise harms progress 4 student & teacher. @DanielAndrewsMP#DisabilityInclusion
“The myth that autistic people do not have empathy is widespread. It’s not true, of course, but it means that lots of autistic people – who know they are empathic – don’t even consider the possibility that they could be autistic.”

@FlowersThatBee This is great @FlowersThatBee . If we want to refer to, or use the poster, how do we reference it? If it’s your creation, I’m loving your graphic design flair!
Paper doesn’t mention how many of the children/YP had a complex trauma/OOHC/looked-after children history, but meeting Special Ed Needs & Disabilities for this gp even more urgent (& tricky), as scant safety net may exist, aside from school, where exclusion is too common.
@EmmaMcSLP Good reminder. Initial sessions routine for us, yet can be enormous for families. I send a Plain English letter to the child/carer introducing myself, explaining what will happen, and saying I look forward to meeting them. Be good to know if it’s useful, or if better ideas.
Interesting SR, no sig relationship found rather co-morbidity. However, when working in youth justice I often found the young people would mask these difficulties so as not to appear weak (their perception) or vulnerable - poss leading to under reporting https://t.co/Xs5cORlAot
I’m encouraged by the suggestion of increased collaboration between speech pathologists and mental health service providers to offer early mental health support that is accessible & engaging for young offenders w SLCN. Our pilot project here.

“Catholic educators are moving towards explicit, direct instruction over inquiry based learning and the early results are very promising." Yes they are. Well done @rossefox, Catalyst team and the wonderful administrators and staff from Canberra-Goulburn CE schools.
A STUDY that asked students with learning behavioural difficulties what makes an excellent teacher has revealed they value instruction over a fun disposition. These children said they don’t want to be let off the hook. They want simple instructions, not simplistic teaching.
