WHAT A PRIVILEGE
#Commonwealthgames2026
It spekas to a very specific, privileged anxiety: the pressure young people in wealthy contexts feel about not having "made it" early enough. But for many people, in our communities, across the continent, the conversation isn't about the illusion of early achievement. It's about the urgency of any achievement before time runs out...

ACCORDING TO THE MEDIA:
Last Friday the Constitutional Court set aside Parliament (IOL) 's 2022 vote that had blocked the Phala Phala impeachment process, basically undid the ANC's "get out of jail free" card. Pres Rams calls a family meeting last night and essentially says: I'm not going anywhere. "Asante sana!"
Mantashe backs him up saying "he will not take shortcuts that everybody expects of him, to just resign and walk away." (IOL)
And THEN, Mbaks fires off a memo summoning a special NEC meeting tonight in CA telling members attendance is compulsory and they'll receive a "deliberate briefing" from the top brass (TimesLIVE)
Whole thing reminds me of watching ducks leisurely and calmly enjoying their stroll in a pond. The paddle underneath is something else.
Anway, the NEC meeting is also giving hita famba moyeni energy, ukongolose insiders say options being considered include Pres Rams taking the panel's report on review, or pushing for watered-down terms of reference for the impeachment committee. (Sowetan)
And then there's EFF and MK... who have already filed motions of no confidence... what makes it worse, the usual internal ANC factions who are divided. According to iol, some arguing that having a leader facing impeachment is untenable especially with November LGE around the corner.
So basically, we need to take an ashwaganda capsule or two and let them big boys and girls handle the matter ... oh and whilst at it... do not forget to pray. Amen.
Then there comes the performative version (that seems to have become a norm nowadays) shaped by something else entirely, an APPETITE. Appetite by the intoxication of proximity to power, the aesthetics of struggle worn like a costume.
The tells are subtle but consistent. They help only when there's a return. They invoke the people's suffering while quietly accumulating. They wear the language of resistance while practicing the logic of extraction.
One was made by persecution. The other is made by opportunity.
They look similar from a distance. Up close, the texture is completely different.
Freedom Day invites us to do exactly that, to look closer. Not just at history, but at ourselves as well and those who claim to carry its flame today.
The freedom that was won was not won by appetite. It was won by people who lost everything ; homes, children, decades, sanity, sometimes their lives and kept going anyway. Not for personal accumulation. Not for the aesthetic of struggle. But because something bigger than themselves demanded it.
So as we mark 32 years of democracy, perhaps the most honest thing we can do is hold that standard faithfully. To honour the likes of mama Winnie and all who walked that road, not with imitation but with integrity. Not by wearing their sacrifice as a costume but by asking ourselves daily: What is the texture of my own conviction?
Is it forged? Or is it performed?
Freedom is and should not be a backdrop for ambition. It is a responsibility handed to us by people who paid a price we will never fully comprehend in this lifetime and even likely not in the next...
Happy Freedom Day. 🇿🇦
May we be worthy of it.
After watching @netflix The Trials of Winnie Mandela I found myself thinking about the Texture of Genuine
There is a version of strength that is forged and a version that is performed.
From a distance they can look identical. Both speak loudly. Both attract followers. Both invoke sacrifice. But over time and having watched closely enough, the texture keeps revealing itself.
Mama Winnie's contradictions and they were real (and they were significant) were the contradictions of someone being continuously crushed and rebuilding. The flaws were inseparable from the wounds.
You just cannot understand what she became without understanding what was done to her, systematically, over decades, by a state that understood exactly how to break a person slowly.
Hi @Uber_Support
I bought items via Uber Eats and even though I was charged for all three items only one was delivered. In addition, while your message says I was not charged , it did and the amount charged for the undelivered items is yet to reflect in my account. Please help.
