How can we repurpose old mines?
HERITAGE OF INDUSTRIAL MODERNIZATION: Taio Gold Mine Museum, Japan (1894-1972)
The Taio Gold Mine is located in Nakatsue village, about 20km South of Hita City, Oita Prefecture in Japan. This village is famous as Cameroon's Football Team residence during the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
In 1894, the Tao gold mine was discovered by a local fishmonger, who found a white rock near an outcrop that a mining engineer identified as gold silver ore. Mining began in 1899. In 1918, British engineer H. Hanter obtained mining rights and managed the Taio mine.
The mine produced about 37 tons of gold and 159 tons of silver for 79 years (1894-1972). Due to depletion, the Taio gold mine was closed in 1972. The mine was refurbished as "Taio Gold Mine Museum" in 1983 and registered as "Heritage of Industrial Modernization" by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in 2007.
