Marine Hab. Resource Specialist @NOAAHabitat (#FishPassage), MS @UofNH - eelgrass in JamesBay, QC. Ecology+freshwater/diadromous fish. he/him. Views are my own.
What do you say when the impossible dream you've worked on for 24 years comes true? Yesterday the plug was pulled from the bottom of Iron Gate Dam; I was there. I thought of everybody who pulled together; scientists, regulators, but especially indigenous activists. Celebration.
Come work with me and @HookLab for grad school!
Topics include lake trout ecotype evolution and spatial ecology of fish in Swedish lakes.
Full announcement below, but don't hesitate to reach out for more information about applying or come find us at #AFS153.
@coreyrees91 I haven't yet but hear they are quite tasty and larger Cunner even have some decent fillets. In NH/ME I always catch them near structure: bridges piling, rocks, piers, etc... Great under appreciated fish!
For the 1st day of #Fishmas 2020, the Cunner (Tautogolabrus adspersus) is a stunner from the east coast! They are found in #estuaries and nearshore waters from Chesapeake Bay to Newfoundland and Labrador. #25DaysofFishmas
Another dam removal success story. In the four years since removal of Bloede Dam on the Patapsco River, the number of Americans Eels counted at the fish ladder upriver jumped from 53 to over 37k. https://t.co/QCOYu7JdPc
The mighty and elusive ‘ferox’ trout making Atlantic salmon look very small at spawning time. These monster brown trout spend most of their lives chasing Arctic charr in the depths of deep glacial lochs. They move into small burns to spawn, something that is rarely seen 🙂
It's (almost) the most wonderful time of the year - #25DaysofFishmas! 🎶
December 1 marks the the 6th (!) year of #Fishmas festivities! What's #25DaysofFishmas all about, and what's on tap for 2022? (a 🧵)

Ok folks. It’s time we talked about eels.
I’m a geologist but I recently learnt about eels and… wow.
Since then, I’ve been greeting strangers with ‘DO YOU KNOW ABOUT EELS?!’
Well, consider yourself a stranger in my path.
Strap in. It’s a 🧵

When your 60cm grayling tagging cradle is too short 😂 Mongolian #grayling is a large ferocious predator, eating prey almost half its size. Its endemic to the remote regions of western #mongolia, in rivers currently prospected for #hydropower. @bnyamba@DrBrodin#fishsci
#Eels have piqued the curiosity of scientists for millenia. The #Sargasso is thought to be where they spawn but eels had never been tracked there. Until now.
For the first time ever, we followed eels to their spawning grounds
