The ocean is complex, to say the least. Conditions can be very different at the surface versus at depth depending upon how currents and water masses are moving over large scales. @SeascapeScience discusses the complexities in a new @islandinstitute blog:

We’re excited to host the Ecological Forecasting Cyberinfrastructure Workshop this week in the NH Seacoast! A convening of the @eco4cast, our team worked with partners from @NASA, @USGS & @usioosgov to bring together practitioners & work toward developing best practices.
The workshop is taking place in New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District. We opened the proceedings with a thoughtful letter from @RepChrisPappas, a true champion for strong science and environmental managements, outlining the importance of what we’re trying to achieve.
Things looked hairy at Buoy B yesterday, but measurements at the Jeffreys Ledge waverider further offshore, also operated by our partners at @UofNH, topped 30 feet yesterday! In fact, more detailed data from @CDIPBuoys show a single wave in excess of 15m - nearly 50 feet!
20 foot waves and 35 knot winds, gusting to over 40 - yikes! It’s rough out there as this Nor’easter blows off steam. As much as we all love the ocean, we hope everyone is warm, safe, and dry on land today!

By researching and monitoring sea level rise, tides, and coastal flooding, we can prepare for what’s to come in the not-so-distant future! 🌊

Power outages reported across the entire forecast area due to downed trees and limbs from the heavy wet snow and winds. Storm is not over yet with additional heavy wet snow through the day. Stay off the roads if you can as tree limbs are still snapping! #mewx#nhwx

Decades of work by partners nationwide is at risk from proposed cuts in the @usioosgov budget, even as climate change reshapes the ocean & human uses evolve as a result. Make your voice heard so champions in Congress can preserve our essential services!

Katy Bland, Engagement & Research Associate for @NHSeaGrant & @neracoos, will be adding additional capacity in the region as the new part-time Program Manager for the Maine Offshore Wind Research Consortium through a new shared role with @Maine_Sea_Grant. https://t.co/YX8xjHjAou
We're excited to expand our partnership with @NHSeaGrant to include @Maine_Sea_Grant as well with the shared goal of building the science needed by all ocean users as offshore wind energy develops in the Gulf of Maine.

Today the #RWSC released the first research plan to guide regional data collection and studies of offshore wind & wildlife. @NERACOOS, @MARACOOS, and @SECOORA helped to develop these recommendations, and we can't wait to continue collaborating! https://t.co/7FJqaGlFF1
Our tide gauge in Hampton, NH documented major flooding this week, and we expect even higher water levels on Saturday. Stay safe out there! https://t.co/u0EQObefOz
Holy cow! This week's weather kicked up some mighty big waves along the East Coast. Newer waves buoys set records, and even the old guard stations recorded wave heights that were only exceeded by Superstorm Sandy. We hope everyone stayed safe for the holiday season!
CDIP stations along the east coast measured historically large and powerful waves earlier this week, caused by an intense extratropical storm. Coastal inundation and erosion was widespread. This bulletin summarizes the complete data set available at https://t.co/Pg6gIgU4Yw.
We’re #hiring for a Research Oceanographer to study the oceanographic impacts from #OffshoreWind development. Location: #MA or #RI. Apps due 12/22! Public/Career trans/Vet: https://t.co/hlJ5A5u1X6. Fed/Career trans/Vet/Other: https://t.co/wyfia85NHz. #Jobs#Hiring
Listen to our very own Jackie Motyka and Katy Bland discuss the importance of sustained and accessible ocean data🌊, on the Energy Environment Economy podcast! https://t.co/jYjjM1G22n
Just one week to go until the deadline for submissions to the National STEM Challenge. We'd love to see some ocean-themed projects submitted from the Northeast. If you have a great idea or know someone who might, please spread the word!

Check out this excellent overview of the eMOLT* program that we are working to expand with a collaborative team lead by @GOMLF! 🦞
*eMOLT: Environmental Monitors on Lobster Traps and Large Trawlers
🦞 Thought technology was a land-based endeavor? Think again. Scientists are deploying sensors in #lobster traps to collect data. More in a new storymap from National @SeaGrant American Lobster Initiative 👉 https://t.co/wHnUUUBOa8 @GOMLF#SeaGrantLobster#sciencetwitter
Happy #FieldworkFriday!
This buoy is part of the NOAA #OceanAcidification observing network and it just got redeployed by @UNH researchers in the Gulf of Maine with new sensors!
Buoys in this network are important for our understanding of #OurChangingOcean conditions
