When one of my ears was very close to a helium balloon 🎈, I was surprised by how well the sound of my voice was canceled out from that side. A balloon with air doesn't do the trick. Any other object I tried didn't have the same effect as well. Why? #Physics#curious
When we take a long, slow walk in the woods, do we tell people that we got to the end and finished it? No. We tell them about the hours we spent observing the beauty of nature with all our senses, paying attention to the tiniest details of wonder.
Math is our abstract nature.
New official collaboration with @mathleague means I will be attempting some new #math problems this weekend. I don't look at the problems beforehand in these Live Solves, in order to talk through how to think about unfamiliar challenges. #iteachmath#mathchat
@Sneffleupagus I can't agree more with you on this. With my younger one I skipped memorizing facts and first watched him slowly adding all numbers, then coming up with all sort of shortcuts, then reaching automaticity. It took a few months but now he's confident and know how and why it works.
@MrKitMath @TinaCardone I also wonder if some students are 1-2 grades above, what strategies are in place in "untracked" schools to support success of those learners?
@jvnanu@robertkaplinsky I don't defend the existing system. My point is that teaching only something with narrow individual direct applications would be disastrous for society.
@missradders It reminds me PEMDAS discussions and I wish you had a third option like "poorly worded question" or "missing information" or "need to be written clearer". n is not defined in Q and can be whatever one wishes.
Here's a beautiful video on Lockhart's famous Lament by @TobyHendy: https://t.co/qKvi5eFcih
She asks a fascinating question: that was written almost 20 years ago; has anything changed?
Perhaps that's why it's just a "lament" and not a "blueprint for how to make things better"?.
@DavidCalculin @AoPSNews@Cshearer41 Sure, it's a quick little trick assuming the puzzle has all necessary info. Otherwise, we would need an angle or something else to "fix" the inclination, which the puzzle doesn't provide.
Five rectangles. The tilted black rectangle has area 16. What's the shaded area?
Special thanks again to math teacher Catriona Agg for creating this puzzle for us! Find her fun geometric puzzles at @Cshearer41

@PeterHayesLLB@MottyStone@CmonMattTHINK I believe Matt knows how to do it but he wants her to explore and either figure it out on her own or arrive at a wrong conclusion. Then, I guess, something like 4 and 2 comes by, which is a very neat way to start talking about GCD. Great activity!
