Mindset/Performance Coach, Youth Soccer Coach & Director of Mindset & Mental Skills @ Western WA Surf, Soccer Dad, Former Athlete @OregonTF - Opinions Are Mine
Once had a parent ask me about the value of working on ball mastery on your own, with some skepticism. My response was that when you are in tight pressure, your limits to a solution are your imagination & the tools which you have developed. @tomsan106
@wishy38457050@_ToddBeane This is so sad. Unfortunately some people take these roles to exercise their own demons and issues from a position of power. We have safesport laws in the US which help, but still need a lot of improvement out there
The best athletes care more about effort than winning. This isn’t because they don’t care about winning. It’s because they know that giving their best effort leads to the best results.
@_ToddBeane@jmmurdock3@TheS_Resource I think the problem is that what both you and @tomsan106 propose is so logical it’s almost too good to believe for those unwilling to be open to change. That or it’s too threatening to fragile egos. Otherwise it should just be a tap in for everyone!
Parents,
Your child does NOT need to play at the highest level possible to have a great college soccer experience.
You can become so focused on D1 that they overlook schools where your child could actually thrive academically, socially, financially and play meaningful minutes.
The goal isn’t to win the recruiting arms race.
The goal is to find the right fit for YOUR kid.

@fitsoccerqueen 100% - elite distance runners know that variation of intensity, moderation and recovery are the keys to reaching the right fitness at the right time. Amateurs try to redline regularly. It’s hard to watch sports like soccer not embrace this concept better, generally speaking.
@THEChrisKessell Younger ages for sure, handball. Olders love this too even though we almost never do.
Across the pond
Soccer tennis
None of these are day to day activities but do try to bring them in from time to time. Energy and excitement almost always at top levels for these.
Leo Messi with an incredible World Cup at the age of 39, all while knowing his father was living his final few weeks/months. The Messi story when it's looked back in years to come is incredible.
No human being with empathy would have blamed Lionel Messi leaving the World Cup to go spend that precious time by his father’s side. But Messi instead gave his all for his country for two months.
One last show for his dad no doubt. Incredibly strong mentality which makes what he done even more remarkable.
R.I.P Jorge Messi
Athlete: Coach… I think I want to quit.
Coach: Okay. Then let’s talk about why.
Athlete: I’m tired. All the early mornings, the pain, the pressure. Sometimes I wake up and wonder what I’m even doing this for.
Coach: That’s not quitting. That’s being human. Doubt shows up when you’re close to something that matters.
Athlete: But I’m not even sure I’m good enough. I look around and see people stronger, faster… happier.
Coach: Comparison is a liar. It shows you everyone’s surface but hides their struggle. You don’t need to be better than them. You need to be better than yesterday.
Athlete: What if I never win? What if I give everything and still fall short?
Coach: Then you’ll walk away with something most never touch—truth. The kind you only find when you’ve emptied yourself for something bigger than comfort.
Athlete: So… you think I should keep going?
Coach: I think you already know the answer. You wouldn’t be having this conversation if you truly wanted to stop. You just want someone to remind you that it’s worth it.
Athlete: It hurts, Coach. Some days, it really hurts.
Coach: Good. That means you care. And nothing worth having comes without pain. Now breathe. You’ve made it through every hard day so far.
Most quit before the breakthrough!
Don’t be like most!
Michael Jordan says losing is not the opposite of winning, it is just another part of winning
“I hate losing. It’s not even a question. But I have to respect losing…”
“Because losing is a part of winning. You never just win. You’ve got to lose to win.”
“Losing is going to hurt… To a point where you look at… How can I do things different? How can I change? How can I make this team better?”
“Before you can look at someone else… You’ve got to look at yourself in the mirror. That’s how things get started. You’ve got to be willing to change.”
If you are trying to make a rondo more than a fruitful activation exercise by adding bells and whistles and goals and hoops, stop.
“True refinement seeks simplicity.” - Bruce Lee
It is an activation exercise - relax and enjoy.

I recommend reading this if you are serious about learning what is working and what is not regarding Elite Player Development. We need to embrace the New and do away with the Old. Let’s wakeup, ignorance is a choice. The info is out there if you take the time to find it. It’s Free.

We don’t celebrate tactical and technical ability even close to the same degree as the physical in the U.S.
Just look at how many colleges will celebrate their highest beep test score from preseason in the coming weeks.
He actually made plays on the ball. He got them in some kind of possession and half chances forward when he could get involved in their utter chaos. There is no player in the world that could’ve done more in his place with how bad Argentina were playing. Their passing was awful. Decisions were slow and awful. Just imaging Mbappe, Yamal, Rodri, Olmo, anyone quality trying to play in that. Messi can be everywhere at once, like no one can. He needs at least 3-4 players who can meet the level of the day for some periods of the game and they couldn’t.
