MEMORIAL DAY IS BLACK FIRST
The first #MemorialDay was originally observed on May 1, 1865, in #Charleston, #SouthCarolina. Organized by formerly enslaved #AfricanAmericans, the event honored 257 Union soldiers who had died in a #Confederate prison camp. The commemoration featured a massive parade of 10,000 people and set the foundation for the holiday.
