THE PROBLEM for the @AtlantaFalcons#Falcons#RiseUp
RICH MCKAY has been an executive with the Atlanta Falcons for 23 seasons. In eight (8) of those seasons, the Falcons have had winning seasons. Two seasons were at .500, while there have been 13 losing seasons.
Name another professional sports executive that has had a position for that long and the team has a record under .500 during that tenure.
2003-2007 - General Manager
RECORD: 35-45
2008-2022 - President - CEO
RECORD: 127-115
2023-2025 - CEO
RECORD: 22-28
2003-2025
RECORD: 184-188
Why is this man still involved in ANY way with the Atlanta Falcons? Two years ago, to placate the criticism of some when conducting a coaching search, Arthur Blank announced that McKay would no longer be involved in the day-to-day operations of the Falcons. Yet, he was still Chairman of the NFL’s Competition Committee and is obviously still involved from all indications.
The collaborative approach employed by Blank and implemented by McKay HAS NOT WORKED. The Falcons have now had EIGHT straight losing seasons.
Now what is going to happen? The Falcons have won three straight meaningless games after being eliminated. Are they going to beat New Orleans Sunday and try to paint a picture that everything is okay, that they are on the right track for success?
Preposterous.
Mr. Blank, I’m not the highly-paid consulting firm you hired within a season, which in itself is an insult to the people who are in charge, but the solution to your issues with this franchise is very simple.
You need a complete reset. Fire everyone - every executive, every scout, every coach, and hire an experienced FOOTBALL man to come in and make this a successful franchise. Let him start over and fix this mess.
Oh, and Mr. Blank, you need to completely take yourself out of the equation. No more conference calls after games. You need to occasionally speak to THE MAN - singular - in charge. And you no longer need to be on the sideline during games.
The most consequential event in the history of Atlanta sports was when Ted Turner removed himself from the operations of the Atlanta Braves and allowed Stan Kasten and Bobby Cox to run the team with full autonomy. What happened? A team that had been a joke in its first 20 years in Atlanta has become one of the best in baseball over the last 40 years. It’s time for Blank to do the same thing.
Start over. Put one man in charge. And get rid of a failure of an executive in Rich McKay. The record in his tenure tells the story.
