Young men are struggling.
Mental health, relationships, purpose... it's a crisis.
Part of the problem? The performative BS version of 'being a man' is winning online.
We need to offer a better vision of masculinity.

@MrZachG Currently choking on AI PD overload. It will save you time they say. What would save even more time is a school wide coherent sequenced curriculum. Instead every teacher for themselves, but, now with AI. Bandaid new process to patch an age old culture problem.
Air quality in class is also linked to your ability to think, too.
Looking at a case where only some schools had air filters installed, this paper shows that cleaner air increased test performance by 20% of an SD - the same impact as smaller class sizes or intense tutoring!
The lousy quality of so many AI education resources is bringing together traditional & progressive educators like nothing else ever has. ChatGPTreaty of Versailles. ❤️
@MrZachG Many of these positions are glorified marketing positions. IE everything we do as a district is amazing, if they were the type to ask “how do we know this works?“ They never would have got the job.
My kid, now a freshman in college, told me her professor announced today (first day of class) that she’s so tired of obvious AI generated essays that she’s carving time out for in class essay writing: shorter essays, hand written, with just the printed primary source material.
On paper this seems like something a Liberal gov’t would do? Instead Trudeau has assisted in cratering youth job market by bringing in record temporary workers?
This is *VERY* exciting news. Summer youth employment programs are one of the things we KNOW work to reduce violence.
It's awesome to see a state-level commitment to scale this evidence-backed public safety policy.

@Nate_Tice No expert, but to me it’s his shoulder, front shoulder is never directly pointed at target, ends up throwing from a more open stance which costs you some whip, and the gives the impression he doesn’t step into the throw. But there is more than one way to throw a ball.
Gambling is one thing I’ve flipped on as I got older. I used to laugh off the critics and think of gambling as “a tax on those who can’t do math” but I’ve come to think that’s cruel (and regressive) and paternalism is good here. This paper is another brick in that new wall.
What "story" would you like to tell about your child's sporting career?
"He was a star in the under 11s. Scored a record number of points that year. He could literally dance through the defense of opposition teams. Everyone told us he would play professionally one day. A couple of years later, he wasn't so dominant, he lost interest and now at 15 we can't get him off the internet or the couch".
or
"He was playing at 11. Loved turning up and just enjoying playing the game with his mates. He was also playing a lot of other sports and enjoyed just being fit and active. Had a couple of ok years and improved steadily. Then at 15 he met a great coach - a #coach who really cared about him and the game and who believed in our son. That ignited a passion for the game within him and now he's working hard to be all he can be".
My friends...we've all seen this haven't we?
The 8 year old who was going to play #GAA professionally.
The 7 year old destined to play #football for Barcelona.
The 10 year old who we all KNEW would be an All Black or a Patriot or a Laker....we all know this early champion thing is a pile of bull dust.
THE FOUR GOLDEN RULES OF EARLY TALENT:
Early rise - early fall.
Early physical talent is a poor indicator of long term success.
Early physical talent is over-rated.
Early physical talent is like a purple elephant - harder to hide than it is to find and mostly useless.
Make it fun.
Believe in them.
They keep coming.
That's it.

@doxtdatorb@realJ_Mitchell I think given students screen time it is unlike any other distraction and robs them of other more beneficial distractions like socializing, even making jokes at the teacher’s expense, and or questioning why they have to learn something. They are tools of pacification.
This thread is really something! I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen so much good straightforward teaching advice presented in such a comprehensive list.
Thank you for sharing!
I've seen people criticized for using the words "effectiveness" and "efficiency" in education. Whatever you think education should do, if you don't care about effectiveness, you don't care about students, and if you don't care about efficiency, you don't care about teachers.
@MikePMoffatt 15 years I have done exercise with students, pick their dream job and after tax find a house they can afford to pay mortgage. 10 years ago it started to become less fun, now many outright reject the whole idea and compete to find best shack in the woods.
