I used to run a removal room where students were sent for disruption etc. 90% of the time I would ask the student what happened, and the response was, ‘That teacher just hates me/ I was just asking a question/ I got sent out for laughing’ etc. Then on investigation what really happened was they told the teacher to f*** off/ they smacked another kid in the head/ they were texting someone. That was so common it became normal.
Why? Because in order to displace responsibility, a huge number of people, students will make stuff up. It’s so obvious that it feels odd to even have to say that.
That doesn’t mean that ‘all kids do’ but it does mean that we don’t just take their word for it as a default, wide-eyed and uncritical.
I’ve worked with kids who put in windows and punched each other on camera, who denied it to their parents, who then rang in angry, saying, ‘He wouldn’t lie to me!’
None of which means we default to ‘not believing’ either. Safeguarding means we treat allegations seriously. But when you work with large populations of students who muck around, you learn to make professional assessments of truth claims.
