40 years ago today, people pushed the state to reopen areas around Mt. St. Helens citing tourism & the economy against advice of scientists. Five days later, the volcano erupted. #msh40
A reminder to be very careful of what you share. Is the landscape right? The language? Are experts tweeting it? Can a quick key word Google image search tell you anything?
We can all help during an event by seeking verification before we tweet.

@Fizzlebah @MtBakerWA Same. There are journalists and SciComm folks that I trust a LOT. They put in a ton of work behind the scenes to ensure accuracy in their products.
That said, there are some media outlets, some with huge readership, that are plain irresponsible.
Your friendly volcanologist reminder that volcanoes don't smoke (and why that matters, because I just saw it in another damn headline) 🌋❤

This is a simulation (fake video) of what an eruption *might* look like in Auckland, New Zealand. It keeps popping up attributed to other volcanoes/eruptions so be on the look out.

Inflation of a volcano can SOMETIMES indicate magma moving (causing the ground above it to swell). However, it can also just be due to the movement and accumulation of gas, which could passively degas without eruption.
This is definitely a volcano to watch in the next days/weeks
If you're mesmerized by the steamy #Taal eruption plume and wondering why it's creating so much #VolcanicLightning, you’re not alone. Here’s a micro-crash course on the physics of volcanic thunderstorms for non-specialists. Thanks to @joshibob_ for the incredible footage! (1/14)

I just want to emphasise that I'm not the account to go to when it comes to something like this. I may be a geology student and may throw out some geology facts, but I'm not an expert.
Theses are the accounts you should go to:

@MtBakerWA hey beautiful, I'm doing a report on you for school. For educational purposes, should you get cranky, would this Twitter page alert residents of said crankiness?
