Interbank $$ rate is almost Rs30 less than grey market, just like Nov-Dec 2022. But there is one stark difference this time around👇🏻

Open market $$ rate is in free float, Govt is not trying to control it. People sending remittances via banking channels (major share) may chose to send via exchange companies instead of hundi

Essential imports, raw materials for exports & export proceeds will keep coming via interbank. Non essential importers may buy expensive $$ from open market to clear their shipments.

Official remittances may not drop sharply as they did in December 2022. Will this be another failed strategy or a master stroke by Ishaq Dar 🤔🤔

Time for a Reality Check, Not Fantasy!

Income Disparity - A Reality Check: Anyone who suggests that Pakistan is the "cheapest" country based on the cost of living is either blissfully ignorant or willfully ignoring the stark realities of income inequality. The GINI Index, an economic measure of income inequality, stood at 33.5 for Pakistan in 2021. This clearly highlights a brutal divide between the rich and poor, showing that the wealth of the country isn't evenly distributed.

Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) - Stretching Your Rupee: The PPP, which examines how far your money will actually go in your country, is a far better measure. It's here that we can see the shallowness of the "cheapest country" claim. In 2021, Pakistan PPP is $3926 , while, the world average based on 182 countries is $21283.

Economic Instability - Inflation, the Silent Thief: The glaring omission in the "cheapest country" argument is the impact of inflation. It's like a silent thief, slowly but surely eroding the value of your money. In 2020, Pakistan's inflation rate was 37% while India's was 6.2%, meaning that money in Pakistan was losing its value faster.

Poverty Line - The Struggle of Bare Minimum: The poverty line represents the bare minimum for survival. As of 2023, approximately 37.2% of Pakistan's population and 6.2% of India's population were below this line, trying to survive on less than $1.90 a day. This paints a grim picture for claiming Pakistan's cheapness based on cost of living alone.

Currency Valuation - The 100 Rupees Fantasy: One of the most blatant displays of misunderstanding economics is the claim that the Pakistani Rupee could somehow surge to equal 100Rs per US dollars. This assumption fundamentally ignores the complex realities of currency markets and economic stability.

Regional Disparities - Big City, Big Spending: Last, It's important not to get lost in the averages. The cost of living in the vibrant cities of Pakistan like Islamabad is much higher than in the rural areas.
