Madam Faryal Talpur calls for intensified action against drugs in Sindh

KARACHI: (16 September 2026)

Sindh Assembly Standing Committee on Home Chairperson Faryal Talpur has directed the police and other relevant departments to intensify efforts against narcotics, with particular emphasis on keeping educational institutions drug-free and protecting young people from substance abuse.

She issued the directives while chairing a meeting of the Standing Committee on Home, attended by all committee members as well as Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, Education Minister Sardar Shah, Excise and Taxation Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla, Social Welfare Minister Mir Tariq Ali Talpur MPA Sohail Anwar Siyal, Qasim Siraj Soomro, Sadia Javed and including all other members of standing committee.

Benazir Income Support Programme Chairperson Senator Rubina Khalid and MNA Shahida Rehmani also attended the meeting as special participants.

Additional Chief Secretary Home, secretaries of the law, excise, school education, college education, social welfare and universities departments, Advocate General Sindh, Prosecutor General Sindh, the Inspector General of Police and other senior police and government officials were also present.

The committee reviewed measures taken across the province to curb the sale and use of narcotics, particularly efforts aimed at keeping educational institutions drug-free. Officials briefed the meeting on the progress made so far and the police also gave an update on the case involving alleged drug dealer “Pinky”.

The meeting reviewed the overall law and order situation in Sindh and discussed measures and strategies to curb street crime.

Ms Talpur said preventing drug abuse, particularly in educational institutions, and protecting the younger generation from narcotics remained among the government’s key priorities.

She directed the police and all relevant departments to work on a “war footing” to curb the menace of drugs.

She also called upon the police and prosecution authorities to ensure effective prosecution of those involved in narcotics cases so that offenders could receive strict punishment in accordance with the law.

Ms Talpur said the performance of the police and other departments concerned had improved considerably in tackling narcotics, but added that much more remained to be done.

She stressed that parents, teachers and civil society also needed to play a leading role in efforts to prevent drug abuse and protect young people.
