California sits at the intersection of two extremes.
On one end is a population of extremely smart, capable Californians that have helped build the 4th largest economy in the world.
At the other end sits the same extremely smart, capable population but who have turned their brains off and have elected, year after year for decades, a group of incompetent and corrupt politicians that have hijacked the governance of the state.
In lockstep, the finances, pensions and livability of California erodes every day: the fire hydrants are empty, the drug addicts get free drugs, the alcoholics get free beer, the criminals get “get out of jail free” cards, the average grades of students are falling off a cliff, you can’t build homes for normal people but you can pretend to build them for the homeless and get taxpayers to foot the bill, you can’t improve health care subsidies unless they are for illegal immigrants, you don’t want to tell the truth about exploding pensions so you change how you report about them to hide the time bomb. And on and on.
The everyday citizens that make California great needs to wake up to the fact that their apathy has created this chaos and we must change direction to undo it.

$GOOGL UNVEILS QUANTUM COMPUTING BREAKTHROUGH WITH WILLOW CHIP
Google scientists announced a major step toward practical quantum computing with their new “Quantum Echoes” algorithm, published in Nature.
The algorithm, run on Google’s Willow quantum chip, solves problems 13,000× faster than the world’s fastest supercomputer and marks the first-ever verifiable quantum advantage, meaning results can be independently confirmed on another quantum computer.
Google says Quantum Echoes could accelerate breakthroughs in drug discovery, materials science, and molecular modeling, showing the potential for real-world quantum applications after decades of research.
so let me get this right:
Oracle says Openai committed $300B for cloud compute → oracle stock jumps 36% (best day since 1992)
Oracle runs on Nvidia GPUs → has to buy billions in chips from Nvidia
Nvidia just announced they're investing $100B into openai
Openai uses that money to... pay oracle... who pays Nvidia... who invests in Openai
Now that the budget bill has passed Congress, we can see what the projections look like for deficits, government debt, and debt service expenses. In brief, the bill is expected to lead to spending of about $7 trillion a year with inflows of about $5 trillion a year, so the debt, which is now about 6x of the money taken in, 100 percent of GDP, and about $230,000 per American family, will rise over ten years to about 7.5x the money taken in, 130 percent of GDP, and $425,000 per family. That will increase interest and principal payments on the debt from about $10 trillion ($1 trillion in interest, $9 trillion in principal) to about $18 trillion (of which $2 trillion is interest payments), which will lead to either a big squeezing out (and cutting off) of spending and/or unimaginable tax increases, or a lot of printing and devaluing of money and pushing interest rates to unattractively low levels. This printing and devaluing is not good for those holding bonds as a storehold of wealth, and what’s bad for bonds and US credit markets is bad for everyone because the US Treasury market is the backbone of all capital markets, which are the backbones of our economic and social conditions. Unless this path is soon rectified to bring the budget deficit from roughly 7% of GDP to about 3% by making adjustments to spending, taxes, and interest rates, big, painful disruptions will likely occur.
"I promise to not raise your taxes" and "I promise to not cut your benefits" are the two popular political promises that are inconsistent with the much more needed promise "I promise to cut the budget deficit to about 3 percent of GDP" that is required to prevent a big debt/dollar crisis. There is no way that the deficit/debt bomb problem can be sustainably dealt with unless there is a mix of tax revenue increases and spending decreases that are determined in a bipartisan way. Our representatives in Washington, DC, both Republicans and Democrats, know this is true. They understand the need to reduce the deficit by having those from both sides chip in a bit (e.g., a 4 percent increase in tax revenue and a 4 percent spending cut) which would lead to a supply/demand balance improvement for US debt which in turn would lower interest rates. Lower interest rates would help reduce the budget deficit as well as help the markets and the economy. But because politics have become so absolutist, they feel they can't go down this obviously best path because both their constituents and their parties will throw them out of office if they explored this more balanced approach. To me, that’s a tragedy.
Yes. A few miscellaneous thoughts.
(1) First, the new bottleneck on AI is prompting and verifying. Since AI does tasks middle-to-middle, not end-to-end. So business spend migrates towards the edges of prompting and verifying, even as AI speeds up the middle.
(2) Second, AI really means amplified intelligence, not agentic intelligence. The smarter you are, the smarter the AI is. Better writers are better prompters.
(3) Third, AI doesn’t really take your job, it allows you to do any job. Because it allows you to be a passable UX designer, a decent SFX animator, and so on. But it doesn’t necessarily mean you can do that job *well*, as a specialist is often needed for polish.
(4) Fourth, AI doesn’t take your job, it takes the job of the previous AI. For example: Midjourney took Stable Diffusion’s job. GPT-4 took GPT-3’s job. Once you have a slot in your workflow for AI image gen, AI code gen, or the like, you just allocate that spend to the latest model.
(5) Fifth, killer AI is already here — and it’s called drones. And every country is pursuing it. So it’s not the image generators and chatbots one needs to worry about.
(6) Sixth, decentralized AI is already here and it’s essentially polytheistic AI (many strong models) rather than monotheistic AI (a single all-powerful model). That means balance of power between human/AI fusions rather than a single dominant AI that will turn us all into paperclips/pillars of salt.
(7) Seventh, AI is probabilistic while crypto is deterministic. So crypto can constrain AI. For example, AI can break captchas, but it can’t fake onchain balances. And it can solve some equations, but not cryptographic equations. Thus, crypto is roughly what AI can’t do.
(8) Eighth, I think AI on the whole right now is having a decentralizing effect, because there is so much more a small team can do with the right tooling, and because so many high quality open source models are coming.
All this could change if self-prompting, self-verifying, and self-replicating AI in the physical world really gets going. But there are open research questions between here and there.
If this continues, America goes de facto bankrupt and all tax revenue will go to paying interest on the national debt with nothing left for anything else.

Suchir Balaji worked as an engineer for Sam Altman building AI, until he decided that Altman was committing crimes. Balaji became a whistleblower, and soon after was found dead in his apartment. California authorities claim it was suicide. Crime scene photos clearly show a murder. Balaji’s mother, Poornima Ramarao, tells the most shocking story we’ve heard in a long time.

US debt to GDP ratio over time. very scary chart; no plan to fix it or even much of an acknowledgement we need a plan.
will get made worse as the rest of the world finds alternatives to the USD and rates stay non-zero.
