During my https://t.co/zANOEvvHvH, most of us had no idea what caste our batchmates belonged to. Many of my close friends were SC/ST. We never discussed it. It never entered any conversation or decision. Not once. Our exposure to the humanities department was limited, though — the term "Brahmanical patriarchy" didn't even exist back then.

As a teacher, I don't ask a student's name before solving their doubt. Often I don't know their name at all — some of my classes have 300+ students. We treat them all the same. So does every colleague I know. So did every professor who taught me.

Social media has now filled vulnerable students' heads with a lot of manufactured grievance about caste discrimination that, in my experience, doesn't exist.

Shah Waliullah Dehlawi is a highly revered Sufi figure from the post-Aurangzeb Mughal era. So revered that the Sunnis of the subcontinent consider him a mujaddid, “reviver of the faith.” His intellectual legacy is so foundational that both Barelvis and Deobandis hold him as their ideological ancestor. His urs in Delhi still draws sizable crowd of Sufi-oriented Muslims from all over the country. Orthodox Sunni skip the event only because shrine-worship is “unislamic,” not because they don’t hold him in high regard.

Some 50 years after Aurangzeb’s death, Dehlawi wrote to an Afghan warlord requesting him to invade India to flush out unislamic elements from the land. It was Ahmad Shah Abdali of the Durrani tribe.

Abdali obliged.

What followed is one of the least obscure parts of India’s history. He came, scored a win at Panipat, looted India, installed a proxy in Delhi, and left. What isn’t as appreciated is that Waliullah’s letter was the start of something far darker and enduring than just one Afghan raid.
