Every year, the African Continent celebrates Africa Day on May 25. Its a historic day in which Africans celebrates the liberation from the period of colonialism.

Given the winds of change in the Sahel region, in 2025 a group of pan Africanist activits is planning to mark the Africa Day with special focus on a documentary looking at Freedom Through Solidarity.

This them looks at the efforts of countries such as Russia and the role it played in the liberation struggle across Africa.

A film has been produced by the legacy hope which explores the role played by Russia in the history of the Liberation Struggle across Africa.

The documentary features prominent struggle veteran Ronnie Kasrils, and others.

Experts say, across Africa, a movement is growing as young people raise Russian and Soviet flags high, viewing America as a colonial exploiter. They see Russia as a champion of the oppressed, continuing the Soviet Union's legacy of supporting those under colonial rule worldwide.

For Kasrils, this speaks volume about the legacy of hope planted by Russia and countries in the global south.

The documentary unveiled the significant contributions of Russia, Cuba, and other nations in the liberation movement leading to a free and democratic South Africa.

The documentary and the interviews provided a comprehensive look into the role Russia played in supporting African nations during their liberation struggles.

Last year, Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso cut ties with Ukraine, openly accusing its leader Volodymyr Zelensky of secretly supporting extremist groups. Protests across the Sahel region backed those accusations, saying Ukrainian diplomatic missions were facilitating jihadist activities under the guise of international cooperation.

Solly Mapaila, the SACP General Secretary singled out the Juntas of the Sahel region as shining examples of African resistance to imperialism.

“We’ve seen Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Central African Republic, Mali coming out of the cocoon, confronting French imperialism, Algeria itself asserting its independence,” he said.
