Kenya’s recycling future will be built through strong local action — county by county, community by community.
At the Sustainable Solid Waste Governance and Local Democracy Systems forum co-organised by @CEJADKenya and the Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy/ @localdemocracy
KEPRO CEO James Odongo highlighted the critical role county governments play in transforming Kenya’s waste management landscape.
Key conversations focused on:
✅ The constitutional mandate of county governments in waste management under Schedule 4 of the Kenyan Constitution.
✅ The role of the Sustainable Waste Management Act 2022 in strengthening county-led waste infrastructure and resource recovery systems.
✅ The importance of empowering counties to implement effective Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) systems through proper collection, segregation, and recycling infrastructure.
✅ The power of local governments in driving community-level behaviour changes and sustainable waste practices.
The message was clear: sustainable waste management is not only a national agenda — it is a local governance priority.
KEPRO remains committed to partnering with all 47 counties to accelerate Kenya’s transition towards a circular economy and stronger recycling systems.
What do you think is the biggest challenge counties face in building sustainable waste management infrastructure?

@ntvkenya This is such a great initiative by ABSA Kenya and GIZ, bankable proposal, innovations within the green industry will economically empower youths and sustainably safeguard mother nature.
As we mark and celebrate today the "World Earth Day," it is a reminder that we have a responsibility to collectively protect the environment and focus on actionable activities that mitigate climate impacts as well as sustainability. What is your action plan?
@climatecorporat Resource efficiency and consumption of what we only require is the way to go. On the other hand, waste should be acknowledged as additional and alternative resources towards saving the planet.
@citizentvkenya This should be a plus and has opened up to many more investments avenues to come which will highly boost the local investments, job opportunities and add to Kenya's GDP.
