Today’s #KUCancerFighter hero hits especially close to home, as we spotlight Reggie Mayo, (father of Zeke) a 53-year-old from Lawrence, battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
Reggie was just diagnosed in November and already has undergone 2 rounds of chemotherapy. He’s now awaiting a bone marrow transplant but must be in remission before they can move forward. Early tests are looking favorable but Reggie has more chemo in front of him as he continues to prepare for the transplant. He and his wife applaud their medical team at @KUHospital and are thankful for the care they’ve received so far.
Reggie is a wonderful son, husband, father, brother, and dear friend to many. One of his children is former Jayhawk sharpshooter, Zeke Mayo - who he, obviously, lists as his favorite Jayhawk of all-time, though Russell Robinson is also high on his list.
Among Reggie’s favorite basketball moments was watching his son score 21 last fall in leading the Jayhawks to a win over North Carolina.
Reggie was a baller himself back in the day, starring at Lawrence High before going on to play at Dodge City CC for Brad Underwood, and eventually at Tennessee Tech.
Reggie, Jayhawk Nation is behind you 100%. We’re grateful for the tremendous son you raised and while we loved cheering for him, now we’re all pulling for you! You’ve got this, brother. Tonight’s call is for you. ❤️💙
Jayhawk Nation, can’t wait to see you show up & show out at this years TBT! Catch me and more alumni going for it all, starting in Kansas City! See you there 💙
