CALHOUN COUNTY, Iowa – Rob Sand campaigns like Iowa’s water problem is somebody else’s mess. It isn’t.

His extended family owns the Lauridsen Group. One of their companies, AMPC, LLC, also known as Essentia Protein Solutions, has been in the DNR’s files for illegal discharges, lagoon failures, and waste in West Fork Camp Creek.

In July 2025, the lagoon overflowed. Wastewater and solids sat outside containment along the creek. The plant knew that morning and didn’t report it.

DNR later cited leaking silos, blood and processing waste in a storm sewer, extra E. coli and ammonia, and a failure to keep enough freeboard. The consent order told them to stop the illegal discharges, fix the land-application permit, and pay $8,000.

By June 2026, DNR was still tying discoloration in West Camp Creek to Essentia’s land-applied wastewater. That isn’t a neighbor’s hog farm next door, that’s the family fortune that has bankrolled Sand’s career.

Then he picked Dave Muhlbauer as a running mate. The family feedlot in Crawford County drew complaints and notices for years, in 2009, 2014, 2015, and 2016, after manure-contaminated runoff hit streams and a tributary of the East Nishnabotna.

Samples showed high ammonia and E. coli. DNR talked to Dan and Dave Muhlbauer before the fine. The operation paid a $7,000 penalty in 2015.

Sand’s whole ticket talks about cleaning up Iowa’s water, while his in-laws’ protein plant and his running mate’s cattle lots have been the ones the state had to chase.

The records are public. You don’t get to poison the stream, and then run as the guy who will save it.
