Interestingly they chose the former spelling of Albtraum

The word comes from the Alb (also spelled Alp), a Germanic night spirit said to sit on a sleeper’s chest and cause bad dreams, not from the mountains.

Until the 1996 spelling reform, only Alptraum was official. The reform added Albtraum so the word would not look related to Alp (a mountain pasture) or the Alps. Duden now prefers the b, and both remain valid.
