In the Women’s safe space in Bardheere, women and girls are able to access essential services, including referrals, psychosocial support (PSS), and case management assistance provided by trained case workers and nurses. The safe space also serves as a platform where participants can connect with one another, exchange experiences, build social support networks, and strengthen their resilience.
In addition to protection services, women and girls participate in learning activities such as numeracy sessions, helping to enhance their skills, confidence, and opportunities for personal development.
Our outreach teams further extend this support into the community by conducting awareness-raising activities that provide women and girls with information on available services, protection issues, and pathways to support.
These interventions contribute to promoting safer, more informed, and empowered communities where women and girls can access the support they need to thrive.
This is implemented by @NAPADNGO with the support of @ActionAid_SS, reflecting our shared commitment to advancing the protection, well-being, and empowerment of women and girls in Somalia.
Are we localizing power or simply relocating the gatekeeper?
That question has stayed with us after today’s first panel discussion at #AidExNairobi conference on the role of local intermediaries in development partnerships.
As the sector increasingly embraces localization, local intermediaries are often presented as a bridge between donors and grassroots organizations bringing funding decisions closer to communities, strengthening local systems, and reducing dependence on international actors.
But an important challenge was raised: If decision-making, resources, and influence remain concentrated in the hands of a few organizations, have we truly shifted power, or merely changed where it sits?
True localization is not just about moving resources closer to communities. It is about sharing power, building trust, and ensuring that local organizations are partners in decision-making not just implementers. The future of development partnerships may not lie in choosing between international actors and local intermediaries, but in creating systems where accountability flows downward to communities.
Share your thoughts, are local intermediaries accelerating localization, or are we at risk of replacing one bottleneck with another?
@NAPADNGO is grateful to @drckenya and @DanishMFA for their support in making sure we are part of this conversation as we advance localization.

For communities living in ASAL regions, droughts, floods, and other climate related shocks are not unexpected events, they are recurring realities.
This perspective framed an important discussion at #AidExNairobi: "Breaking the Endless Cycle – Is Anticipatory Action and Disaster Risk Financing Ready to Move East Africa Beyond Crisis Response?"
As local actors working directly with vulnerable communities, we see firsthand the devastating human and economic impacts of responding after disasters strike.
The conversation highlighted a fundamental shift that our region must embrace, moving from reactive crisis management to proactive risk management.
Anticipatory action and disaster risk financing offer an opportunity to protect lives, livelihoods, and development gains before shocks escalate into full-blown humanitarian crises. However, realizing this potential requires more than innovative financing mechanisms. It demands stronger local leadership, shifting power, improved early warning systems, greater investment in preparedness, and direct access to resources for frontline organizations that understand community realities.
We appreciated hearing diverse perspectives from policymakers, donors, humanitarian agencies, and local organizations on how to bridge the gap between risk information, financing, and timely action.
@NAPADNGO is grateful to @drckenya and @DanishMFA for their support in making sure we are part of this conversation.

What if localization was backed by systems built on trust, shared accountability, and equitable partnerships?
This important conversation brought together local NGOs and INGOs in Kenya at a workshop convened by @NAPADNGO in collaboration with the @KenyaAsal in partnership with @drckenya with support from @DanishMFA Kenya to discuss due diligence passporting from a locally led perspective.
The discussions focus on reducing repetitive compliance burdens, strengthening mutual accountability, and advancing partnership models that better support local leadership within the humanitarian and development sector.
Because meaningful localization requires more than shifting resources, it requires transforming the systems behind them.

Access to safe and dignified sanitation facilities is critical to protecting community health and strengthening resilience during flood emergencies. By prepositioning gender-friendly latrines in Beletweyne, NAPAD in partnership with @ActionAid_SS and support from @StartNetwork is enhancing preparedness and readiness among flood-prone communities, ensuring vulnerable households have access to safe sanitation facilities when disaster strikes. This anticipatory intervention supports communities to reduce exposure to sanitation-related health risks, and helps prevent potential disease outbreaks during periods of flooding. Strengthening access to essential sanitation infrastructure before emergencies occur is key to safeguarding dignity, health, and resilience in flood-affected areas.
Strengthening the capacity of women human rights defenders is essential for advancing community protection, social cohesion, and inclusive civic engagement in fragile contexts. With support from @ActionAid_SS, NAPAD conducted a capacity strengthening workshop for Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) in Mogadishu as part of ongoing efforts to expand protection and strengthen human rights advocacy across communities in Somalia. Through peer learning and capacity strengthening, women human rights defenders are now better positioned to document protection risks, support affected individuals through appropriate referral pathways, and advocate for stronger community-level responses to human rights concerns.
Empowering young people to lead disaster preparedness efforts is essential for building resilient and responsive communities. Ahead of the anticipated Deyr rainy season, @NAPADNGO, with support from @ActionAid_SS , facilitated the formation and mentorship of Youth Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Groups in Buloburde, Hiiran to strengthen locally-led anticipatory action and community preparedness.
Through mentorship and capacity strengthening, youth volunteers were equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to support emergency readiness and response at the grassroots level. The initiative promotes sustainable community volunteerism while reinforcing the role of youth as key actors in resilience-building and local development processes.
The trained volunteers support early warning dissemination, community awareness raising, risk communication, and monitoring of flood-prone areas, contributing to more timely and coordinated action when disaster risks emerge. By investing in youth-led preparedness structures, the intervention enhances local response capacities and advances inclusive, community-driven approaches to disaster risk reduction in vulnerable communities across Buloburde, Hiiran.
Strengthening community preparedness before disasters strike is critical to protecting vulnerable families from the devastating impacts of climate-related shocks. In anticipation of the upcoming Deyr rainy season and increased flood risks in Beletweyn and Bulaburde districts, NAPAD, with support from @ActionAid_SS & @StartNetwork, implemented anticipatory humanitarian interventions aimed at enhancing resilience and early response capacity.
In Cilaanle Village, vulnerable households received emergency Shelter and Non-Food Items (NFIs) to support preparedness and help families safeguard basic living conditions in the event of displacement or flooding. In Bulaburde District, a 50M3 water storage tank was installed to improve access to clean water, reduce water contamination risks, and support public health outcomes in flood-prone communities.
These initiatives reflect the importance of early action in reducing disaster risks, strengthening community resilience, and supporting at-risk populations before emergencies escalate.
