Advancing Soil and Land Management Research for Uganda’s Pearl Sweet Oil
Today, NARO was pleased to host representatives from the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) @ACIARAustralia at the Secretariat.
The DG acknowledged the Australian Government’s support to NARO through various initiatives since 2014. These collaborations have focused on trees for food security @NAFORRI_UG , strengthening agricultural value chains and, importantly, building human capacity.
Following the discovery of Pearl Sweet Oil @MEMD_Uganda, the engagement was particularly timely. Plans to establish an agroforestry green belt along the oil pipeline will require strong scientific foundations in soil research and sustainable land management.
Discussions explored potential areas of collaboration, including the development of soil and land management strategies, formulation of supportive soil policies, promotion of soil-management innovations, and strengthening human capacity in soil research.
NARO today hosted @CABI_News CEO Dr Daniel Elgerat its headquarters in Entebbe to explore new areas of collaboration in climate change adaptation, AI, digitalisation, data governance, pest & disease management and joint resource mobilisation.
NARO DG Dr Yona Baguma reaffirmed NARO’s commitment to working with CABI to harness AI, digitise research processes and develop data platforms that support evidence-based investment and decision-making.
Together, we can advance resilient, productive and sustainable agriculture in Uganda and beyond.

DREAM Rice Project Kicks Off at NARO!
Today at the NARO Secretariat, Prof. Akio Ido, President of Kagoshima University, Japan, joined NARO leadership for the DREAM Rice Project kick-off meeting.
The DG celebrated more than 20 years of Uganda–Japan collaboration, which continues to strengthen rice research and production. Key milestones include:
✅ Upcoming release of two(2) Super and two(2) Basmati rice varieties
✅ Rehabilitation of the Doho Rice Irrigation Scheme, supporting the growth of large-scale rice farming
✅ Uganda’s transformation from a major rice importer to a near self-sufficient producer serving both domestic and regional markets
The DREAM Rice Project opens a new chapter in developing resilient rice varieties, strengthening farmer livelihoods and advancing Uganda’s food security.

The NAROPOT 7 and 9 varieties are suitable. Productivity would depend on many factors including quality of seed, plant management among others. More assistance can be got at the NARO sub station at Ikulwe
Newly Released Irish Potato Varieties: NAROPOT 7, 8, 9, and 10!
We have officially kicked off the seed harvesting of our 4 newly released Irish potato varieties: NAROPOT 7, 8, 9, and 10!
Engineered for climate resilience, industrial processing, and maximum returns for our farmers:
✅NAROPOT 7: Early maturing (90–100 days) with up to 30.2 t/ha yield enabling up to two seasons a year!
✅NAROPOT 8 & 10: High dry matter content (up to 28.1%), tested with top processors like Psalms Food Industries @sumz_snacks & Café Javas for crisp & chip quality.
✅NAROPOT 9: Heavy yielder at up to 31.4 t/ha with high late-blight resistance!
To meet massive demand, our potato seed hub at @NaroKazardi is set to produce up to 1 million plantlets annually to supply farmers across Kigezi, Rwenzori, Mt. Elgon, and Zombo.
This Week: The Soil Plant Clinic!
For farmers in vulnerable communities like Karamoja, every planting decision counts.
This week, our Soil & Plant Clinics in Nakapiripirit and Amudat tested soils for over 150 farmers.
With 60 trained Soil Doctors now serving the region, farmers can access local testing for soil organic matter, structure and pH, turning soil knowledge into healthier crops and stronger livelihoods.

Don't guess what your soil needs, Test it.
We hosted a soil clinic at Loregae market and tested samples for 80+ farmers. Here are 3 reasons why a soil test is the smartest pre-planting move you can make:
1. Save money: Testing shows exactly what nutrients your soil has + lacks. No more buying fertilizer you don’t need.
2. Beat problems early: Like striga. We found low organic matter + weak soil structure in striga-infested fields. You can fix it before it ruins your yield.
3. Grow more: The right pH + organic matter = healthier crops and better harvests.
Soil testing takes minutes but gives you answers for the whole season.
Thanks to the Global Soil Doctors Program, local Soil Doctors in Loregae & Namalu are bringing testing to the market.

Where can farmers get genuine NARO seed?
Uganda’s crop journey has evolved from early introduction, mass selection to modern, science-backed breeding.
Today, @NAROUganda takes another major step in delivering quality research directly into farmers' hands.
NARO has licensed Miracle Seeds Ltd and Hummer Uganda Ltd to multiply and distribute certified improved varieties.
When buying seed, look for the NARO Varietal Identification Number (NVIN) on the package, your mark of a genuine NARO variety.
NARO implements technology transfer, in this case, of her improved varieties through two main routes, the public route and the commercial route.
The commercial route involves the private sector, in this case, the seed companies who produce certified seed.
The second route, the public route involves community seed producers, local seed businesses and trained farmers who produce quality declared seed for farmers. In the public route, the ZARDI’s play a critical role in producing foundation seed and training the seed multipliers about seed production practices.
To ensure that the public receives information about the improved varieties, we have a number of promotional activities like seed fairs, farm clinics, on-site demonstrations, n formation materials both physical and electronic, which can be found through the resource center on the NARO website.
We are committed to continue to innovate new ways to disseminate useful information about NARO’s improved varieties.
Do you have any suggestions you n what more we could do?
Uganda made history as the 1st African nation to release perennial rice!
Today, NARO engaged with @irri Director General Dr. Yvonne Pinto and her delegation to accelerate the #RiceForAll agenda through ground-breaking science & partnerships.
Key milestones from the bilateral discussion:
✅Leveraging AI for smarter, climate-resilient rice breeding
✅Aligning partner strengths to scale farmer-ready solutions
✅Setting up an IRRI Country Research Hub hosted at NARO premises
Exciting times ahead for Uganda’s agricultural future!
