Misinformation is part of why only 40% of women in #Singapore get screened for #CervicalCancer, despite it being the 10th most common cancer here.

2022 was the year we started our #NPC#NasopharyngealCarcinoma#OpenFundLargeCollaborativeGrant
4 years on… I can say that we have built a reasonably strong core to advance NPC translational and clinical research in Singapore!
The symposium is a testament to the reputation of the program and look forward to hosting everyone at @NCCS_SG !

Faster, safely? When a January 2026 paper feels old.
This week AI and cancer care converged in Singapore — at @ASCO Breakthrough and @NCCS_SG Grand Rounds on Trustworthy AI in Oncology.
In the Q&A I asked: How do we organise ourselves to move faster, safely — when even publicly available AI models advance week by week?
The pace is striking — one speaker called a January 2026 paper “old”. But in healthcare the stakes differ from consumer tech. Even “an app” is never just an app — it's a socio-technical intervention: patients, clinicians, data, governance.
Three things from the panel stayed with me:
1️⃣ Leaders must be conversant enough to make timely calls — and some of that “feel” only comes from using the tools yourself. As Singapore @MFAsg Minister @VivianBala put it recently at @aiDotEngineer: “You cannot govern a technology that you have only been briefed on.”
2️⃣ Build data foundations and governance early, so value can be harvested later.
3️⃣ The level of checks should fit the level of risk — not every project needs the same controls.
The challenge isn't “speed vs safety”. It's building institutions that can move faster, safely — a strong engine, reliable brakes, responsive steering.
In oncology, trustworthy AI must stay clinically useful, patient-centred — and never lose the human touch.
Big thank you to @DanielTruhn@UniklinikAachen and @PrelajArsela@IstTumori for making the trip to Singapore — very much in the spirit of cross-region collaboration as @PoonEileen@SSO_Singapore shared, and hosted by @EvelynWongYT@ryansheatan@iaintan_mdphd@danieltanmd. Looking forward to future brain-storming and discussions!
