1️⃣ In April, the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights @ChgoCivilRights, Restore Justice @JusticeRestore, and Uptown People's Law Center @uplcchicago released a groundbreaking critical report titled 'Ending Long Term Solitary Confinement in Illinois.' The report outlines the inhumanity of solitary confinement and supports the Nelson Mandela Act, which seeks to curtail solitary confinement practices.

2️⃣ In New York, a trans man who had been subjected to solitary confinement and sexual abuse won a settlement of $275,000 against the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. In the words of Erin Beth Harrist, director of the LGBTQ+ Unit at the Legal Aid Society @LegalAidNYC, the plaintiff's story is "tragically emblematic of the plights facing many incarcerated transgender people throughout the state." While the settlement may deter prison officials from mistreating other trans people in their custody, we need real policy changes to ensure the safety of all incarcerated individuals. #HALTSolitary @NYCAIC

3️⃣ In partnership with Amend @UCSF, Washington's Department of Corrections @WACorrections has sent 100 corrections officials to Norway to learn how to make Washington's prisons safer. Facing frequent riots and high recidivism, Norway transformed its prison system in the 1990s with a new focus on rehabilitation, rather than tightening restrictions, heightening surveillance, or using aggression. This move indicates a mindset shift towards more humane correctional practices. @civilsurvival

4️⃣ In October, New Jersey Prison Justice Watch @njpjw published a report titled 'Isolated Voices: The State of Solitary in NJ 2024,' a collection of testimonies from solitary survivors who continue to suffer from unlawful isolation practices in New Jersey.
