Interdisciplinary group @ESEImperial of geologists, engineers & computational physicists modeling flow in the Earth, from CO2 reservoirs to magma chambers
🌋NEWS: New research looking at molten rock 20km below the Earth’s surface could help improve the prediction of volcanic activity.
The study published in @ScienceAdvances involved Dr Catherine Booth (@booth_ca) & Prof Matt Jackson.

We had our 3rd consortium meeting hosted by our partners in Poland, Wroclaw. The meeting took off with two days of presentations, workshops and intense discussion. This was crucial to plan the next semester activities. Getting together is becoming increasingly rewarding!
SEMACRET 3rd Consortium meeting has started! We are gathered in Wrocław discussing results progress and upcoming challenges #HorizonEurope#SustainableSourcing
What's it like to juggle parenting and caring responsibilities with a science career? And how do caring responsibilities prevent academics from networking? Geophysicist and graphic designer @fcrameri shares his takeaways from EGU23.

🚨 We are hiring a postdoctoral researcher to work with our partners in Lisbon University! If you are an expert in mafic magmatism and related ore deposits apply, full details here https://t.co/WbOiB2RSL5
A blog post about the panel I spoke on at #EGU23, please have a read and watch the recording!
Very timely, considering I’m exhausted from EGU and from more hours caring to give my Mum a break after she was solo caring whilst I was at EGU.
Last but not least, Haiyang presenting our 3D finite element magma reservoir simulator at #EGU23. Thank you to the attendees for some great discussions!
Check out Geraldine’s (@gg_regnier) poster on “Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage in the UK: Current Status and Challenges to Uptake” at X4.133!! She’ll be here until 12.30 CEST to answer all your questions 😊
Great talk from Tom Rowan (@TSLRowan) from Imperial College London on “Automated vertical Self Potential gradient logging and analysis for the tracking of Saline Intrusion” which included some great results using IC-FERST!
Yesterday, I was lucky enough to talk at a panel at #EGU23 about being a carer with a career in geoscience. The convenors made it such a safe place for the EGU community to talk about their experiences on this topic. But unfortunately...1/n
The session was recorded and will be available for anyone who missed it. It's so important that more people join this conversation and learn from carers' and parents' experiences so we can see positive change take place.
A really important conversation yesterday at #EGU23 on juggling caring and parenting responsibilities in academia. Thank you to all the panelists, including @booth_ca for sharing your personal experiences and discussing ways to support carers and parents.
Catherine shared with us some sobering statistics from the UK: nearly 10% of the population provide unpaid care. Despite this, very little support is available. Much more to be done from our institutions, whether that be providing financial support or setting up carer networks.
“Do these comments come from a place of judgement? Or do they come from a place of misunderstanding?”
Such an important, powerful and sobering talk from @booth_ca about being a carer in academia #EGU23
Despite the large potential for aquifer thermal energy storage, lack of awareness means that the number of systems in the UK is still low so articles like these on the benefits of the technology are invaluable!
🗞️NORMS in the news this morning! 🗞️ Matt discusses the potential of aquifer thermal energy storage, which could provide low carbon heating and cooling to buildings.

One week today, we'll be at @imperialcollege's Royal School of Mines for a #UKGeoenergy Roadshow.
The £31M UK Geoenergy Observatories at Glasgow & Chester provide facilities uniquely capable of the experimental investigation of heat & fluid flow in the subsurface.
Some great PhD projects on offer at NORMS! I’m very happy to talk to anyone about what it’s like doing a PhD in NORMS and @ESEImperial, as well as what it’s like having Matt as a supervisor! Also happy to connect you to other people in the group 😊
