Very sad to get the news of the passing of HE Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji or Triple A as we fondly called him, former Minister of Finance and an iconic predecessor of mine in that office. My deepest condolences to his family and to the nation. May his soul rest in perfect peace.

At the unveiling and launch of @paul_nwabuikwu‘s wonderful new book "The Pain and the Promise". This nifty collection of essays, stories, poems and commentary, is a great read that offers true insights into Nigeria‘s journey as a country over the past three and a half decades, interspersed with stories of ordinary human beings trying to make life work in a country that is not always so easy to navigate. At the 7th Africa Emerging Markets Forum Conference in Abuja, Nigeria, giving a keynote address on „Strengthening Global Resilience in an Era of Geoeconomic Uncertainty: The Role of Rules-Based Cooperation and Inclusive Growth“. This was followed by a fireside chat with H.E. Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso @cenbank. Also with Dr. Harinder Kohli, Director and Chief Executive of the Emerging Markets Forum. Among other important participants were @suman_bery, Former Deputy Chairman, @NITIAayog (National Institute for Transforming India); @IndermitGill, Chief Economist of the @WorldBankGroup; and Menachem Katz, Senior Advisor of the Emerging Markets Forum.

Tremendous engagement by @wto Members who highlighted India’s economic and trade policy successes, as well as challenges, as it works to transform the economy and sustain its current high growth path. @IndiaWTO

At the @UN Security Council High-Level Debate on Natural Resource Governance convened by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the current Chair of the UN Security Council with H.E. Mme Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner @RDCongoMAE, Minister of Foreign Affairs, presiding. Many thanks to the DRC and H.E. President Felix Tshisekedi @FelixUdps for the invitation to join the @UN SG H.E. @antonioguterres to brief the Security Council on the governance of critical minerals. Focused my intervention on the need to move from rent extraction and dependency to value addition that favors local and subregional value chains, creating jobs involving local communities and increasing developing economies’, especially Africa’s, shares of global trade. Only through this can you build peace. With proper governance, critical minerals can be a source for peace and prosperity and win-win global cooperation rather than a source of conflict. Great opportunity to also give a hug and say hello to my sister DSG @AminaJMohammed.

On the occasion of its Trade Policy Review, India has announced its ratification of the Harmful Fisheries Subsidies Agreement, becoming the 123rd WTO Member to do so. As the 5th largest Marine Fishing Nation in the world, India’s ratification is highly significant. Congratulations to the Government of India, to H.E Minister @PiyushGoyal, H.E Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and his delegation including H.E Amb. Senthil Pandian - Indian Ambassador to the WTO @IndiaWTO.

Meeting with accession candidate Curaçao and potential accession Lebanon. Great to receive H. E. Mr. Caryl Monte, Curaçao’s Chief Negotiator who brought the national decree formalizing the basis for accession negotiations and renominating him as Chief Negotiator. Curaçao looks set for hard work following the re-initiation of their process. Many thanks to Working Party Chair, H.E. Amb Matthew Wilson @Matthewbarbados of Barbados for his recent visit to Curaçao. Also exchanging views with H.E. Amb Caroline Ziadeh of Lebanon and the newly named DPR, Mr. Kamel CheikhAli, on Lebanon’s present situation and the government’s push for reforms even in the midst of conflict.
