@RhonddaBryant Much better to look at when he was in charge of a FTSE 100 firm that sold out to a US conglomerate...much like how the Tories sold the UK over decades.
The UK Gov should only do small (max £1m) or look for a hybrid investment when the start-up provides a desired service the gov wants (e.g. military, health, transport or IT/tech). That hybrid investment is to scale up operations to meet a gov threshold.
Nothing else.

Ok… I haven’t seen the pitch deck for the £52.6 MILLION investment UK taxpayers have just made in Nexeon for batteries BUT … I do know this!
After nearly 20 years in business, turnover is still just £7.9 million a year AND It has already burned through more than $200 MILLION in previous funding.(wow)
And now taxpayers are providing more than HALF of its latest £100m funding round. This is a HIGH-RISK equity investment with YOUR money.
Personally, I wouldn’t risk your cash on this bollocks. And certainly while you’ve got potholes nobody can afford to fix and people who haven’t seen an NHS dentist in years.
Just saying. (But then, I give a shit about your money and the government doesn’t)
@alexburghart A lot of chatter on this...a couple of things some people have decided:
1. It was used when it isn't an emergency
2. We doubt it will actually be used in an emergency (for fear of creating panic)
Net result: people turn off the alerts
@maxtempers The 2015 inflation basket haircut had 225 scissor snips at 5.8p per snip. 2025 basket has 450 snips (@ 4.5p). That's deflationary!
We're all having much nicer looking hair this decade.
@Sonjamclaughlan I thought the weekend sessions were pretty full.
It's the midweek sessions, which are far cheaper, that are empty.
I think the problem is not many knew the event was taking place. Very poor marketing/awareness.
Kids already booked into Summer activities & holidays now.
@jo3hill Very interesting. The <£1m looks like good news.
I'm not sure how much the >£5m changes things though as it's going to be for the Primes. I expect lots of hire locally etc., which will be a major focus in BCR calcs anyway?
@tomhfh The lengthening of copyright protection to 70 years after death / publication (depending on type) is, IMHO, far too long.
Compare that to just 20 years for patents, which also comes with annual fees.
I feel a flat 25 years would be a better all round number for IP.
@jo3hill Nice read & great points. 2 things:
1. Do China/US have a home procurement bias?
2. All companies have an experience curve (quality and price improves over time)...you can't go along the Exp. curve without procurement. Day 1 might be worse but Day 1000 can be far better.
@MelJStride@TheSun We have this huge problem that many don't want to look after their parents in old age. This is abnormal behaviour.
I feel that those willing to look after their parents, no matter their wealth, should not be charged this levy. It needs an opt out.
@NEF This is very common in public procurement. Low levels of competition and a lack of allowing new entrants into the market.
I would look at the lack of new entrants as part of the problem.
