Senior journalist and Editor of the Zimbabwe Independent, Faith Zaba, has been arrested by the Zimbabwe Republic Police on allegations of “undermining the authority of or insulting the President” — over a satirical Muckraker column published last week. Despite medical confirmation of her severe illness, police insisted on detaining her overnight, ahead of a court appearance on 2 July 2025. Zaba, the first female editor of the Zimbabwe Independent and a mentor to hundreds of young female journalists, now faces an attack not just on press freedom, but on the voices of women in media.

In a landmark decision, the High Court has dismantled a controversial & unconstitutional provision of the Criminal Law (Codification & Reform) Amendment Act by declaring it to be constitutionally invalid as it infringes several fundamental provisions in the Constitution.
I was going through @NBSZbloodbank Financial Reports for 2023. They have an 80% gross margin. Which means without considering adminstrative costs, on a pint they are charging $250, they make a gross profit of abt $200. So in fact processing blood costs them just $50 and they charge the patient $250. THIS IS INSANE!
Now in 2023 after paying themselves, keeping the lights on and everything, they made a profit/surplus of $3.5 million. Which is 32% of their gross revenue. What this means is that, NBSZ has the capacity to cut the price of blood by 30% and still make a surplus.
They call themselves a Not-For-Profit organization but they are profiteering as an organization from poor people. Imagine, they even have the audacity to write in their report that "Revenue grew 272% on inflation adjusted basis from the previous year, which is also 1470% in historical terms"
My conclusion after reading this report, NBSZ is not there to serve people. Yes, they provide a noble service but they are not doing this for charity or goodness of heart - they are there to suck the blood out of pple while lining their coffers!
Our family statement- we never imagined the support afforded to us during the time our Blessed Mhlanga was arrested and detained. We went through serious pain but you comforted us. Now he has been released, you are happy with us. He will speak soon, but as Mhlanga’s we thank you
WATCH | Tsikidzi outbreak in Kwekwe
Mayor of Kwekwe, Albert Zinhanga, commented on the bed bug (Tsikidzi) outbreak in the city:
“As the City of Kwekwe, we have been carrying out regular fumigation, particularly in the affected areas of Mbizo Section 7 and Amaveni. However, I want to clarify that the outbreak is limited to specific parts of these suburbs — it is not the entire Amaveni or all of Mbizo 7, but only certain sections where the bed bugs have been found.”

The 9th Gender and Extractives Symposium is underway.
🚨Zimbabwe’s mining sector is booming—but women are still being left behind.
Despite their vital contributions, women remain locked out of leadership, stuck in precarious artisanal roles, and burdened by environmental damage, unpaid care work, and regressive tax policies.
Meanwhile, profit shifting and opaque tax incentives rob Zimbabwe of vital revenues that could fund gender-responsive public services like healthcare, GBV support, and climate-resilient infrastructure.
At the 9th Gender and Extractives Symposium, we say: it’s time to #AccelerateAction.
We’re calling for:
✅ Transparent & fair taxation of mining revenues
✅ Equal participation and leadership for women in the sector
✅ Sustainable, climate-smart mining practices
✅ Support for women-led enterprises and small-scale miners
By integrating tax justice with gender equality, we can turn mining into a true engine of inclusive development and environmental stewardship.

A reminder of the GoFundMe set up to assist the family of Zimbabwean journalist and political prisoner Blessed Mhlanga.
His wife needs to see him daily, bringing him food and water. This money helps with that.
Thank you to Stephen Sackur for the donation!

Thank you very much, @ZimRightsLIVE, for publicly standing with Zimbabwean journalist and political prisoner Blessed Mhlanga.
Prison is a very lonely place, but knowing that the society you were jailed for serving is standing with you makes it more bearable!
Citizens, RETWEET this letter to Blessed from ZimRights.
The recently approved Kwekwe City Budget has come under intense scrutiny from various stakeholders, including disability rights advocates for its lack of inclusivity and failure to prioritize the needs of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

This is Zimbabwean lawyer Doug Coltart reading a letter written from prison by detained Zimbabwean journalist Blessed Mhlanga, who was arrested on Monday and denied bail for a crime he did not commit.
He is accused of transmitting subversive material after his employer, HSTV, broadcast a briefing by war veteran and former secret service officer Blessed Geza.
In a normal country, if there were any case at all, it is HSTV that should be brought before the courts, not an employee. Blessed speaks from his heart in this prison letter, showing that far from attempting to break him, this persecution is making him stronger.
He needs our support, let us RETWEET his message in this video, solidarity is all we can give at this point.
A free, independent media& active civil society can help expose #corruption and hold duty bearers accountable. Such institutions should be allowed to operate without fear /intimidation.
Protecting #whistleblowers who expose #corruption is essential.
