I’ve seen a lot of wild races at the Boston University track. 16-year-old Sam Ruthe running an outright New Zealand record of 3:48.88 is near the very top.
The youngest human being ever to break 3:50 in the mile.

16yr old Sam Ruthe just completed the most amazing Jnr mid-distance double that I've heard of. Solo 3:38.6 1500m followed by a solo 1:46.8 800m at NZ schools champs!
For some background on Sam - his grandparents were a 2:12 marathoner and 2:00 800m runner, and his parents both ran at WXC for NZL - some great generational pedigree !!
🗣️“I just had to try and forget about that, they’re just my competitors at the end of the day.”
@FriarsXcTrack’s Kimberley May didn’t let the pressure of racing against Olympians get to her today, as she came through 3000m in 8:44.73 at the BU Terrier Classic. She’s now the 7th-fastest woman in NCAA history.
It’s a good thing she can handle herself in pro fields, because she’ll have another one coming up next weekend at the Millrose Games🤩

@jgault13 Raced them both in 2003 before their first WCs head-to-head at Paris 5000m - in 2024 I feel like an old man, and they're both still going at it!! Both legends!
Phew!!
It’s raining and blowing a gale in Wellington, NZ at the moment
So James Preston decides to take the lead and run a 50.5 first lap
Then runs solo last 250m to finish in 1:44.87 PB , 2nd all-time NZ and just off world standard
Amazing in those conditions
@cdodge43@karagoucher@adidas Hoka did appropriate the words of te reo maori and the symbolism to create their brand and name and then scrubbed it from their website once they realised their US market preferred its own pronunciation of the name.
New Zealand only has 5 million people but they always seem to have at least one good miler - Peter Snell, John Walker, Rod Dixon, @nickwillis and now @samtanner
