How to write a problem statement
that will get your research noticed.

A great problem statement has 4 parts:

1. Lead-in
Introduce the topic and generate interest.
Set the stage for the problem.

2. Declaration of Originality
Identify a gap
In the existing research or knowledge base.

3. Central Study Focus
Clearly define what your study intends to investigate.

4. Impact
Establish why the research matters.
Explain the potential benefits
("so what" and "how so" questions).

A good exercise to practice writing this

Write 3 quick sentences:

1. The lead-in sentence.

2. A sentence about originality, with an identification of what the study would do

3. A justification sentence.

Here are some templates for these:

1. The Lead-in

• [Broad topic area] has been the subject of much research, however...

• Despite ongoing work in [field], there remains a significant issue/problem regarding...

• While [existing understanding] is established, recent trends/developments highlight...

2. Central Study Focus

• To date, no study has comprehensively examined [specific aspect] within the context of...

• Little is known about the [specific phenomenon] despite its potential impact on...

• This study will address the knowledge gap/overlooked aspect by investigating...

3. Justification

• Findings from this research have the potential to [benefit/impact/improve]...

• This study will contribute valuable insights for [field/stakeholders] by...

• A deeper understanding of [issue] could lead to [practical applications/policy changes]...
