@ramit You could do it in a series of informative replies to a post. ;) it takes a lot to offend me but also, I understand you think I am wrong, no worries. :) In general I’m happy to learn if you have something to add!

@ramit There are a myriad of reasons why people dont build additional housing on their property, and I’m sure zoning in some areas plays a part, but for the most part, its not the single-family homeowner (as a group) that is to blame for a systemic issue. Granted, I know of some jerks.

@ramit I can’t speak to everyplace in US, but in California where housing has been a big concern, every Single-Family zone allows for the development of at least 2 units. (Using ADU laws) Urban areas would allow for further lot splits and more housing. And yet we still have problems!

@ramit Again, its normal for single family homeowners to resist giving up their lifestyle, but they are not the larger problem. There is a housing crunch in specific areas (urban, etc.) but problems with housing in other areas that are not land constrained stem from larger issues.

@ramit I think that is a factor in some cities yes, but not everywhere. For example, there are large areas where housing is cheap but people just don’t want to live there for one reason or another.

@ramit It’s not illegal, in that an individual COULD request a redesignation for their property or neighborhood to allow for the housing they say they want. What tends to happen is that people want someone else to provide the housing so they can keep the lifestyle they have.

@ramit For example, instead off forcing grandpa Joe to give up his home of 30 years, they could make it more feasible to build that high rise in a mid rise neighborhood.

@ramit Large cities with a likeminded politic should take on the rezoning effort and put their money where their mouth is and provide the housing they demand others provide.
