Ongoing collaboration with the local community is essential for authentic learning experiences in real world contexts (Sharkey, Olarte & Ramirez, 2016). Through community-based projects students and the community work together to achieve a common goal to benefit all. #UoNTeach
@SammieL98 This is exactly right. At the beginning of my teaching experience I was afraid that having a noisy class meant that students were not on task. However, after experiences on placement I realised that this isn't the case, talk should be emphasised to allow students to achieve this.
@livcob Wow! Once you calculate the amount of time spent at school, you really think and reflect on how much of an impact we can have on all aspects of our students lives. Thank you for sharing.
@livcob I agree, using project-based learning within a unit which focuses on Cultural Diversity would be a great way to not only promote inclusion but also develop deeper understandings and knowledge of this topic. It also provides opportunities for students to use 21st Century skills.
Some great statistical stimuli from @HarmonyDay_AU, for learning about, and understanding our country’s rich multiculturalism. These images would be a fantastic way to prompt students’ thinking and spark discussion about Migration. #UoNTeach#CulturalDiveristy#Migration#EDChat
@courtneytrudge1 21st Century learning to me, means developing important skills for the future through actively doing. Using project-based learning tasks provides the opportunities for students to actively participate in learning, think critically and creatively, collaborate and communicate.
This image reflects my understanding of the need to foster 21st Century skills through actively doing. Participating in authentic and real-world projects which require action and collaboration with community, allows students to develop the necessary skills for life. #UoNTeach
A unit focussing on #Migration not only situates learning on the big picture focus of #CulturalDiversity but embeds activities to cognitively, socially and emotionally engage and challenge students through connecting them with the world (Boix Mansilla & Jackson, 2011). #UoNTeach
Due to our dynamic world, it’s important to develop intercultural understanding and global competencies alongside 21st Century skills in units. These are the foundations to equip our students to effectively live and work in the 21st Century(Boix Mansilla & Jackson, 2011).#UoNTeach
@MGageler Yes definitely. After explaining the purpose and importance of compost, displaying posters would be a great way to reinforce and help students understand of the types of products and foods which can be used for compost.
@KellyMieka Thank you for sharing Mieka. There are some great resources on this website to use when developing units of work which include the big picture focus of #CulturalDiveristy.
@KateLinnane These are alarming statistics. This would definitely provoke great discussions of the importance of using reusable and environmentally friendly bags. It could even be used as a topic for a debate or persuasive letter. Plastic bags vs. Reusable bags.
@KateLinnane@Clean_Up These are some simple but highly effective ways to be sustainable. I could definitely adopt and use some of these tips in my future classroom to reduce waste and our impact on the environment. Thank you for sharing Kate.
Prior to learning about #CulturalDiversity, I believed it was about the teaching of different cultures. I now realise that this learning has a deeper focus of fostering students’ empathy and compassion; key qualities to develop active, informed and respectful citizens. #UoNTeach
@ashleysafranko4 This is wonderful! A great way to effectively and meaningfully use ICT to explore and present #culturaldiversity in learning. This would be such a relevant activity for students.
@ellenm_morgan This would be an extremely helpful tool when planning units of work to ensure we are globally educating and equipping our students with the knowledge and skills to become informed, active and responsible citizens (Shulsky, Baker, Chvala & Willis, 2017).
@KateLBurns Awesome! Thank you for your recommendation @KateLBurns. As my unit of work will have a focus on Migration this would be a great place to find quality information and resources. I will definitely look into this place.
So many great activities to celebrate the many cultures of Australia. 🌏🧡What activities have you seen or heard about that have been effective in promoting learning and appreciation of cultural diversity? #UoNTeach#culturaldiversity#awareness#inclusion#appreciation
Around the world in just one day!
Schools across our Diocese celebrated the 20th anniversary of Harmony Day this year as they dressed up in traditional clothing, enjoyed plenty of fun activities and learnt about all different cultures.

@SammieL98 Thank you. Yes this activity definitely allows students to develop the general capability of Intercultural understanding. That geography focus would be fantastic for exploring cultural connections to places and also could link to reasons for migration in History.
A local school has implemented a world map pinboard to show the diverse cultural backgrounds within the school. 🌏 The students loved learning where many of their peers had connections to. What KLAs could this activity link to? #InclusionInAction#UoNTeach#CulturalDiveristy
@courtneytrudge1 Yes, that’s a great way to use this activity to explore the big picture focus of #CulturalDiveristy through a relevant and engaging topic within History. Thank you, this will definitely be something to research and include within my unit of work.
