Important leadership from @SenBillFerg. We can & should be concerned about safety while insisting on the truth about reforms.
“The idea that police officers cannot talk to children when they’re trying to gather facts for a crime — that’s not true. It is just simply not true,”
🧵1/4
THIS is leadership! Thank you @SenBillFerg!
Ferguson asserted that the direction that MD is moving in...is the right one – much better than warehousing them in facilities and “forgetting about them”.
“That’s not the answer. It won’t be the answer. It’s never the answer.”
So much of the narrative on youth crime is rooted in the myth that the system is too lenient. Grace's story told the unfortunate truth: the opposite is true, especially for kids of color. Bravo to Michigan for these changes & Grace, @Jodiscohen & @propublica for sharing the story
I will never forget when Grace’s mom called me more than 3 years ago, pleading for help. How could her teen be detained for months for not doing online homework?
This week, Michigan enacted laws to change its juvenile justice system.

@rmnb Obviously, this is bad for so many reasons. A real heel turn for Leonsis, who is already the worst NBA owner... Weighing in from BaltCo - Alexandria is (or at least feels like) a totally different ball game than D.C. - especially on weeknights. Hard to imagine going to games.
IMPORTANT UPDATE!
Due to a scheduling conflict and the high number of virtual RSVPs, we are rescheduling our event with @JusticePolicy & @AdvanceMaryland and making it fully virtual.

The BPD release feels like a mirror image of much of the local news coverage right now.
Kids = <10% of arrests, and
Kids = 80% of news stories about crime
We can and should be concerned about youth crime without implying that youth are driving crime trends.
BPD put out release on "hundreds" of recent arrests, calling special attention to those involving juveniles.
Considering current debate,
here's the breakdown.
191 adults, incl:
6 robbery (could be carjacking)
12 stolen auto
18 juveniles
3 carjacking, 9 stolen auto
On this day in 1995, a Princeton professor wrongly predicted that violence in the U.S. would rise dramatically due to an incoming wave of "super-predators," coded language for young, Black males. https://t.co/zxh3z4RHyf
“Should Rockville allow 16-17 year-olds to vote in city elections?”
71% of Voters: Nah
“I just don’t think they’ve got maturity or knowledge at that age”
Reminder that for 30+ offenses, 16-17 year-olds are AUTOMATICALLY charged as adults.

We need to listen to the voices of the young people who are experiencing the justice system – THAT'S how we can serve them and our communities.
@MorningEdition thank you for helping these young people tell their stories!

“Law enforcement needs to do what they can do, prosecutors need to do what they can do, parents, DJS, DSS needs to do what they can do. Not one entity should put their hands in the air and say, ‘there’s nothing I can do’.”
Yes! THANK YOU @jillpcarter!
