My dad is the one who buys foodstuffs in the house. He buys everything in large quantities. Everything! So we've never suffered for food. The only time he eats at home is dinner. Except for weekends. One day, he said he wanted yam because he bought it in large quantity the previous month. And we told him yam is finished. He asked, "All that yams?" We answered yes. His response was, " Oga oo, I didn't even eat from it." He just went out.
We felt bad when he came back carrying bag of yams, that day I realised that he doesn't even eat much from what he worked hard for. Yet he did not stop buying.

My first week in the UK, I went to a Tesco store to buy a few things. I picked toothpaste, body oil, lubricant and big mayonnaise.

I got a bag and, after putting the items inside, the bag suddenly tore and the mayonnaise broke.
The first thing that ran through my mind was:
“Chai… so I will have to pay for another one again?” 😪😭

While I was still deep in my sapa thoughts, about 2–3 staff members rushed to me saying:

“Oh my darling.”
“You alright?”
“Bless you, my lovely.”
“Are you hurt?”
“Do I need to ring 999?”
“Do you need medical attention?”
“Are you sure you’re okay?”

I was so confused like… what exactly is going on here? At the same time, I felt like a spoiled toddler being over-pampered.

Then one of the staff members rushed to the aisle and replaced everything I bought. I mean everything.

About a month ago, i got exposed to the HIV virus through a needle prick while assisting in surgery; a cesarean section precisely. I had to get started on HIV-PEP (post exposure prophylaxis) for 28 days.
I took one tablet of PEP everyday for 28 days religiously without fail.

I slowly started losing my mind without anyone else (aside the surgeon) knowing what was actually wrong with me. I’ve been sleep deprived, constantly praying and overthinking the worst possible outcome.

Yesterday, I gathered the courage to go for a retest after completing the 28-day regimen. The test turned out NEGATIVE and I couldn't be happier.

I hired a young man to help my father around the house after his surgery. He showed up fifteen minutes early with a notebook, asking about my dad’s medication schedule and favorite meals. I expected the basics, just light cleaning and making sure he didn’t miss his pills. When I came home that evening, my father was laughing. The laundry was folded, dinner was warm, and the porch light had been fixed. They were playing chess at the kitchen table.

I told him he didn’t have to do all that. He shrugged and said, “I don’t like doing things halfway.”

Turns out he was studying physical therapy but had paused school because he couldn’t afford his clinical hours. He was working multiple small jobs to save up.

I mentioned it to a friend who runs a rehabilitation center. They needed an assistant and were willing to sponsor the rest of his training in exchange for a work contract.

He went back to school that fall.

Some people don’t just show up for the job. They show up for the calling.
