I got asked today - why do I care about User-Owned Internet, User-Owned AI?

May be it's because I grew up in Ukraine where people never give up under centralized corruption.

May be it's because I saw my grandparents savings disappear with USSR collapse. Or stories of non market economy that they have lived under, waiting in lines to get basic necessities.

May be it's because seeing how even what is expected to be most democratic government can enact Patriot Act and maintain between different administrations.

May be because I've been thinking about AI since I'm 10, I have imagined having control over AGI back then and that power would clearly corrupt whoever had it to benefit themself.

May be because I see that AI is going to be last technological wave and with it an ultimate power will wagered. Society will change and we have a slim margin to make sure that technology continues to be democratic and doesn't become another autocratic tool.
